Stanford University lies at the heart of the Silicon Valley, both literally and historically, and is considered one of the most prestigious universities in the U.S. Additionally, it is one of the few American schools to combine top-notch academics with winning athletic programs.
Stanford was founded by railroad magnate and California Governor Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane Stanford, and is named in honor of their deceased teenage son, Leland Stanford, Jr Locals and university affiliates are known to refer to the school as The Farm, a nod to the institution's origins as a horse farm.
Stanford University is governed by a board of trustees, in conjuction with the university president and provosts and the deans of the various schools.

Stanford Hall is a stately home in Leicestershire, England, near the town of Lutterworth.
Ancestral home of the Cave family, the hall was built in the 1690s for Sir Roger Cave on the site of an earlier manor house.
The aviation pioneer Percy Pilcher built some of his early gliders here in the 1890s; he also built a powered flying machine here that many historians believe was capable of flight, but he was killed nearby in an accident in 1899 before he could try it.

 Percy Pilcher in the Aviation History Encyclopedia
In 1899, Pilcher built a glider called The Hawk, based on the work of his mentor Otto Lilienthal, which he flew from the grounds of the stately manor Stanford Hall in Leicestershire, England.
Lack of finance meant that he was unable to finish building the engine without sponsorship, so he tried to attract some by giving flying demonstrations in The Hawk.
His final fateful flight was to a crowd of onlookers and potential sponsors at Stanford Hall - he crashed to his death, and interest in his work evaporated.
