Poniatowski volunteered as an ordinary soldier (reported for duty at Kosciuszko's camp near Jedrzejow on May 27) and did not want to lead the Insurrection in Lithuania, which was what Kosciuszko proposed (he recommended his friend Wielhorski for that job; Wielhorski replaced the demoted radical Jakub Jasinski, but his tenure in Lithuania was not successful).
Poniatowski counterattacked, leading into the action each of his battalions in turn (Tsar Alexander watched this from one of the nearby hills), but with the rest of the French army was compelled to withdraw toward the city.

One a hunting ground attached to the Ujazdow Castle, the are was acquired by the king in 1776 and within a short time transformed into a splendid park complete with a palace, an amphiteatre and a number of buidings scattered around.
Despite various ups and downs the complex has retained it original shape and architecture and is a perfect place for a walk.

Poniatowski's reform-minded regime largely restored the responsibility for censorship to municipal authorities alone.
It was only performed for the first time in a considerably altered version ten years later in Cracow, due to the Stary director Stanislaw Kozmian's personal intervention with the Viceroy's office, but at the cost of the complete removal of the derogatory term "Moskal" (Muscovite).

The Museum is housed in the classicist Krolikarnia palace, which was modelled on Palladio's Renaissance villa, "Villa Rotonda", and was built in 1782-1786 by Domenico Merlini for Karol Alexander Thomatis de Valery, the Chamberlain of King Stanislaw August Poniatowski.
The name "Krolikarnia" ("the rabbit warren") reflects the fact that rabbits used to be bred here during the reigns of the Saxon kings.
His style was close to that of the Mloda Polska (The Young Poland) movement, and had some affinity with August Rodin's art, especially in such works as Maternity and his Pregnant Woman series, intentionally synthetic and compact in form.
