  PMC SITES: STANISLAW MONIUSZKO
Stanis³aw Moniuszko was born on 5 May 1819 to the patriotic family of Polish landowners settled in Ubiel, near Minsk (now: Byelarus; he died on 4 June 1872 in Warsaw).
The music of Moniuszko's works is largely representative of the 19-th century opera, given the extensive use by the composer of arias, recitatives and ensembles, with the exception of Straszny Dwor (The Haunted Manor), where beautifully scored choral parts testify to Moniuszko's mastery of writing for many voices.
Moniuszko's manuscripts have not been catalogued and described; no scholarly monograph on the composer is currently available.

Stanislaw Moniuszko was born in 1819, nine years after Chopin, and soon became popular through publishing songs whose melodies and rhythms showed his love for the folklore and dances of his homeland.
The same characteristics pervade the operas and Straszny dwór is further enhanced by Moniuszko’s mastery of writing for chorus and large ensembles.
Moniuszko died in 1872 without ever hearing the opera with its original libretto.

The opera is based on a poem by Moniuszko's contemporary Wlodzimierz Wolski.

Moniuszko is often described as the Polish equivalent of Russia's Glinka, a pioneer of his country's national opera.
In some places a French Auberesque vein of rhythmic and harmonic piquancy peeps through…" It's hard to say what Auber's influence was on Moniuszko but they both love using dance rhythms throughout their work, in Moniuszko's case homegrown dances such as the mazurka and polonaise.
In 1840, he moved to Vilnius where he became involved in musical life, eventually writing his first big success "Halka", which was such a hit he was invited to be the first conductor of the Warsaw Opera in 1858.

Two years later Moniuszko composed his first masterpieces: the String Quartet, the Mess and the music for 'A Night in Apeniny' of Aleksander Fredro.
In 1862 Moniuszko wrote 34 songs in Paris, entitled as 'Echo de Pologne', which were a great manifestation of his patriotism (all it happened just before the January Uprising in Poland).

Serov, the young Russian critic of the time, referred to Moniuszko's compositions as "brilliant works." While in St. Petersburg, Moniuszko met and befriended many of his contemporaries, prominent in Russian music including Mikhail Glinka, Mily Balakirev, and Modest Mussorgsky.

It is not easy to get this opera on CD in Poland, and practically impossible everywhere else.
Like Moniuszko and Wloski themselves (28 and 23 respectively in 1847) the roles of Halka, Jontek, and even Janusz are twenty-somethings so in some ways tt seems counter to the spirit of Moniuszko's age to have these sung by stalwarts of the Teatr Wielki in their 50s and 60s, respected as they may be.
On the other hand it would probably be difficult to find five individuals anywhere more expert in this repertoire and Barbara Zagorzanka gives a light enough touch to Halka's arias.
