Topic: Stanislaw Sosabowski

Stanisław Sosabowski - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stanisław Sosabowski was born on May 8, 1892, in Stanisławów, in a railway workers' family.
According to the Polish mobilisation scheme, Sosabowski's regiment was attached to the 8th Infantry Division under col. Tadeusz Wyrwa-Furgalski.
A small part of the brigade with Sosabowski was dropped near Driel on September 19, but it was not until September 21 when the rest of the brigade finally arrived in the distant town of Grave, falling directly into the waiting guns of the Germans camped out around the area.

Sosabowski was promoted to Major-General in June 1944, equal to that of Roy Urquhart, and was therefore qualified to be a commander of an entire division rather than just a brigade.
Sosabowski was full of praise for the pilots who delivered his Brigade, who in spite of poor weather conditions and heavy anti-aircraft fire had managed to drop them as well as they had ever achieved during training.
Sosabowski asked the British cavalrymen to intervene on their behalf, but they refused as their vehicles were too lightly armoured to be used in such a way and they also pointed out that their radios could contact both the 1st Airborne Division and Nijmegen, and so were too valuable to risk.

Choice fell on the 6th Infantry Division to serve as the base of the new unit.
In spite of considerable wartime Polish experience in airborne operations, accumulated by General Stanislaw Sosabowski's 1st Separate Airborne Brigade (1 SBSpad.), the creation of the 6th Airborne proved more difficult than expected.
In 1989, as the unit was evolving in the direction of an airmobile, rather than airborne, force, 6th PBPD became the 6th Assault Landing Brigade (BDSz.) and apparently lost its Pomeranian honorific.

British Lieutenant General Frederick Browning (played by Dirk Bogarde), the overall commander of the operation (in the movie, at least; more about that later.) briefs his key commanders on the plan.
Those commanders are: British Major General Roy Urquhart (Sean Connery); American Major General Maxwell Taylor (Paul Maxwell); Brigadier General James Gavin (Ryan O’Neal); and Polish Major General Stanislaw Sosabowski (Gene Hackman).
Some of the more notable performances: Dirk Bogarde as an appropriately stuffy, pompous General Browning; Sean Connery as the hard-as-nails First Division commander; Anthony Hopkins as Colonel John Frost; and Elliott Gould as Colonel Stout, the cigar chomping builder of Bailey bridges.
