A voivodship (in Polish województwo) is a unit of administrative division and local government in Poland since the 14th century.
As a result of Local Government Reogranization Act of 1998, 16 new voivodships were created (effective January 1 1999) and replaced the 49 voivodships which had existed since 1 July 1975.
Tree smallest voivodships of Warsaw, Cracow and Lodz had special status of city voivodship; the city president (mayor) was also province governor.

 Ivano-Frankivsk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After the Partitions of Poland it became a part of Austrian Empire and successively of the autonomous Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria.
In 1919 it was a subject of Polish–Ukrainian skirmishes and eventually became a part of the Second Polish Republic as the capital of the Stanisławów Voivodship.
In 1939 invasion of Poland by German and Soviet forces the territory was captured by the Soviets and attached to the Ukrainian SSR.

The coding of geographical units is based on the Wykaz symboli terytorialnych wojewodztw, gmin i miast (Register of Territorial Codes for Voivodships, Counties and Cities), Warsaw: Glowny Urzad Statystyczny (Central Statistical Office), 1992.
There are 49 voivodships in Poland, which are specified by odd numbers ranging from 01-97 (a convention of the Polish Central Statistical Office).
The 49 voivodships have been aggregated by the Polish statistical office into eight regions (makroregion), which reflect historical, cultural, and geographical distinctions within Polish society.

The percentage of Jews in the eastern voivodships and in Warsaw was even greater: for example, in Polesie - 49.2%, Wolyn (Volhynia) - 49.1%, Lublin voivodship - 42.9%, Nowogrod voivodship - 42.6%, Bialystok voivodship - 38.7%, Stanislawow voivodship - 34.8%, Warsaw and Tarnopol voivodships both of whose Jewish populations were 34.7% of the total.
In the western voivodships, the percentage of Jews in terms of the total population was negligible; in the Poznań and Pomorze voivodships they only represented 0.3% of the population.

It connects town with Chernivtsi (Czerniowce / Czernowitz / Chernovtsy) on the south, Horodenka, Kolomyya (Kolomea / Kolomya) and Ivano-Frankivsk (former Stanislawow / Stanislaw) on south west and Tovste (Tluste / Tolstoye), Chortkiv (Czortkow / Chortkov), Kopychyntsi (Kopyczynce / Kopychintsy), Khorostkiv (Chorostkow), Terebovlya (Trembowla / Terebovla) and Ternopil (Ternopol / Tarnopol) on the north.
Among buildings worth attention are Roman Catholic Church built in 18th century, Rathaus (ratusha or city hall) dating also from 18th century and palace...Distance to mai city of Ternopil on the north is at least 100 km, while much closer to Chernivtsi on the south (some 60 km).

The townspeople of Stryj gathered in a 2-storey building of the "Gwiazda" Association, which was built before the war.
The same incidents took place in the prisons of the Stanislawow voivodship--Nadworna, Horodenka, Zydaczow, and Stanislawow.
Starting in 1942, the clandestine Polish military organization "Armia Krajowa" was active in Stryj.  Members of this organization were priest Swiezawski, Professor J. Fries, Jaroslaw Krasinski, A. Makarewicz, Mieczyslaw Jarosz, and others.  During this time the administrator of Stryj was the German commander, Captain Weide.

Thereafter Galicia comprised a Polish Ruthenian Voivodship (województwo ruskie Voivodship) until 1772, when it became the largest part of the area annexed by Austria in the First Partition.
As such, the Austrian region of Poland was known as the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria to underline the Hungarian claims to the country.
The name Galicia also can refer to an Autonomous Region of Spain.

When the unit reached the regiment strength, it moved west to join another Polish unit, known as the division of General Zeligowski, then organizing in Odessa.
This combined force, after a long march through Bessarabia and Bukowina in Rumania, reached the Polish border at the town of Sniatyn in the later Stanislawow Voivodship.
After crossing the Dniestr at Jezupol in June, 1919, the unit undertook offensive action against Ukrainian elements, with the objective of reaching the Zbrucz River and clearing the territory of plundering enemy groups.

AGAD, the Archiwum Glowne Akt Dawnych (The Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw), is the repository of 2,010 Jewish metrical books for the area of the former Lwow, Stanislawow, and Tarnopol voivodships (now Lviv, Ivano Frankivsk, and Ternopil oblasts in Ukraine).
To order records from those towns that have been indexed and have reached their fundraising goal, JRI-Poland, in cooperation with the Polish State Archives, has instituted a “Shopping Basket” system of online ordering where payment can be made by US$ check or money order or Credit Card (VISA and MasterCard).
And these detail maps appear to show town names as they were during the Austrian period.
