  OutKast: Stankonia (2000): Reviews
Stankonia is among the most exciting albums of the year, not only because it brazenly addresses hip-hop's spiritual emptiness (other well-intentioned rappers have tried) but because it musically surpasses the most innovative work of street production dons like Swizz Beatz, Manny Fresh, and Timbaland.
Stankonia leaves nothing to be desired as it is energized by Outkast's clever lyrics coupled with their cutting edge production, which is an expansive take on the original Atlanta sound.
Stankonia lays bare the group's desire to be something greater than just rap stars.

Like London Calling, what Stankonia does is expertly takes the roots and influences of a talented group and effectively filters them through their own developed sound, at once paying tribute to those influences and also building on a diverse and eclectic range of styles.
Stankonia is a timeless album, a classic record, one of the best of all time.

 :: MVRemix: Album Reviews - Outkast - Stankonia ::
As universally respected figureheads of the Southern rap renaissance, Big Boi and Andre 3000 are probably hip-hop's most important group, and 'Stankonia' is a fine follow-up in their tradition of diverse and brilliant albums.
The rhymes themselves, however, are almost irrelevant; Outkast have always have fantastic deliveries and 'Stankonia' is as irresistible in the respect as any of their other work.
Like their other albums, 'Stankonia' is a collection of fantastic songs that, when put together in proper sequence, with skits and all, sound a lot better.

Stankonia was OutKast 's second straight masterstroke, an album just as ambitious, just as all-over-the-map, and even hookier than its predecessor.
Keyboardist/producer Earthtone III helms most of the backing tracks, and while the live-performance approach is still present, there's more reliance on programmed percussion, otherworldly synthesizers, and surreal sound effects.
It's no wonder Stankonia consolidated OutKast 's status as critics' darlings, and began attracting broad new audiences: its across-the-board appeal and ambition overshadowed nearly every other pop album released in 2000.

Stankonia demonstrates the quandary perfectly: nearly everything I love on this album finds a concept of modernism by transposing the duo's dream of a p-funk revival through an ostensibly dated brand of eighties-vintage artificiality.
On a superficial level, Stankonia does sound a lot like Kelis' Neptunes-produced Kaleidoscope album, all uneasy whiny synth effects and a blocky, verging-on-disintegration rhythmic approach that always sounds raw and unpolished even at its most intricate.
Anyway, so yeah, Stankonia is indeed the hip hop album of the year, and I congratulate Outkast for having made an album that so perfectly suits my tastes (there's some hubris for y'all).

That song, and all the others on "Stankonia," take the listener to another realm musically, a realm that bears the album's name, as coined by Andre 3000 and Big Boi of Outkast.
Many of the songs are open to interpretation, with an obvious meaning and a double one, and are open to interpretation because of the untraditional and exciting meanings Outkast assigns to its lyrics.
"Stankonia" in my mind successfully changes the hip hop landscape to resemble the other-world that is Stankonia.

Stankonia is a place, without doubt, but it's scarily, crucially, critically elusive and hard-to-define.
It's one of pop's great mental communities; the new ideals for living that have perhaps been pop's greatest gifts to the world, the enrichments with which it marks its era.
The idea of Stankonia - as a slowly unfolding story, a community of weird normality and universal pathology which has no map and no specific description, but is nevertheless a clearly-defined mental community - is slowly forming.

As an experience, Stankonia is way funky, and yet succeeds in taking you on different courses, from the Earth into outer space and back again - with several tangents in between.
Finally, "Slum Beautiful" and "Stankonia" are two melodic excursions similar to earlier OutKast tracks like "Funky Ride" but with a twist for the 2000, and bring the album to a satisfying conclusion.
Yet 'Stankonia' is far from being their best effort - you could even argue that it's their worst - but they haven't fallen off, and the truth is that, despite its flaws, it's one of the outstanding releases of the year.

Then, we heard the first single, "B.O.B.," with its southernbassalistic beat, spitfire delivery, and Eddie Hazel-like guitar work from David Whild, clearly one of the greatest rap singles ever, and it was critic heaven.
It is a chorus of great brilliance and hard work and insight and blues and love on one fist and hate on the other.

Conceptually, OutKast's fourth album is a bit more down-to-earth than its third album "Aquemini." They start the album throwing gasoline on the American dream, and search for answers on "Stankonia," presumably a planet in which the usual myopic dismissals of hip-hop get smashed.

Nude as the News: OutKast: Stankonia
In six years, he and partner Antwan "Big Boi" Patton have become two of the most talented lyricists and rappers of this era, what Snoop Dogg was eight years ago -- before he lost most of his creativity and charm -- Big Boi is now, simultaneously a confused sexist yet sweet and protective father.
Stankonia is really the culmination of the group's first three records, since it contains the Dirty South slang of their 1994 debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, the atmospheric beats of 1996's ATLiens, and the pure head-bobbing genius of 1998's unconventional Aquemini, one of the 1990s' best and most important rap records.
Just like there will be a greater difference between Radiohead's OK Computer and Kid A than Kid A and their next record, OutKast simply need to make good songs now since the artistic growth can decrease from monumental to just noticeable.

Sex can be tender and honest, too: See "Stankonia (Stanklove)" and "Slum Beautiful." Or it can be dispassionate and male-bonding wary; on "We Luv Deez Hoes," Big Boi cautions against overindulging in gold-digging groupies.

On their fourth release, Stankonia, No. 1 stunners Dre and Big Boi have expanded their eclectic repertoire with an edgy and oftentimes humorous collage of songs heavy on frenzied electric guitar and scattered synthesizer effects.
A few of the most flavorful tracks, such as the gospel choir- and electro-funk driven first single "B.O.B." and the neck-snapping "Gasoline Dreams," are propelled by rallying hooks and pumping bass lines.
Meanwhile, songs such as the tranquil "Slum Beautiful," which features trance-inducing guitar loops and Al Green-esque vocals à la Goodie Mob's Cee-Lo, are no less breathtaking.
