Along the way, Booth paints fascinating character portraits of the musicians and their fellow travelers, always accentuating the fact that these are not untouchable emperors, but sensitive human beings in extraordinary situations.
Booth paints the picture of a man who is trapped high on a pedestal by his success--a situation which he may not be all that comfortable with, but who seems to lack the inner motivation to return to his true path of singing the music that he loves.
Booth’s approach to writing the Presley piece is unique, in that he happened to be friendly with Dewey Phillips, as well as with the man who discovered Presley and who first produced his classic material, Sam Phillips.

The significance of Stanley Booth as a writer will forever be marked by his proximity to the Rolling Stones.
Stanley Booth's diary of his time with the Rolling Stones is a nearly definitive example of this sort of journalism.
As much Booth's story as the Stones', the book covers a brief (albeit pivotal) period in the lengthy history of the band, and it culminates at one of the group's darkest moments - the violence-plagued concert at Altamont.

Stanley Booth is overqualified, to say the very least, to write this biography of Keith Richards, the muscle behind the music of the Rolling Stones; having toured with the band in 1969, he chronicled the events leading up to their December, 1969 brush with darkness at Altamont.
Booth is not incapable of being critical towards his subject; he is unsparing in his criticisms of Keith's bull-in-a-china-shop lifestyle, his drug addictions and self-denial concerning his addiction problems, but mostly, this book celebrates the life, music, and adventures of the greatest living symbol of rock's defiant spirit.
That Stanley Booth is one of America's finest profile writers AND a close friend of Keith Richards should have ensured this biography would be a moving, essential read.

Stanley Booth's "The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones" became, largely, a lost treasure is one of the literary mysteries of the last 15 years.
Undertaking to write a book on the group, Booth was witness to the early days of the Stones' transatlantic success, a period that marked their ascent to nearly unparalleled fame and fortune.
Booth's strong, sound prose brings to life the out-of-control process through which an age intoxicated by its own passions found a hard-driving music to live hard by.

Almost unique in that the book is autobiographical whilst being biographical, the world's best rock and roll band is captured on their US tour in late 1969, when they were at their most dangerous, Brian wasn't long dead and the time was right for fighting in the street.
Booth was one of a select group of "media heads" who accompanied the Rolling Stones on their triumphant and ultimately infamous winter tour of North America in 1969.
In common with the Maysles brothers film "Gimme Shelter", Booth's book is more than a mere reprise of their tour, instead he alternates the countdown to rock n' roll armageddon with the stratospheric rise of "The Greatest Rock n' Roll Band in the World".

With pen poised and eyes wide open (throughout the greater part of the tour), Booth documented their stateside misadventures with voyeuristic charm, though the nature of the group's exploits were already considered reprobate by an industry in which bad behavior is part of the creative process.
Given this potential, however, there were only three deaths during the show, and Booth's retelling of the Stones' rather abbreviated set - cut short by numerous confrontations with the Angels - still stands as one of the best pieces of rock literature around.
Also woven into the madness is the eloquent evolution of the Stones' music, not born to earlier (mainly white) rock n' roll, but to the blues of neglected southern fl performers like Slim Harpo, Muddy Waters and Jimmy Reed.

It's highly unlikely that Stanley Booth 's "The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones," published in 1984 and now available only from Booth himself (who's written for Salon) or used book outlets, can be improved upon, so why bother trying, I say.
However, fine as it is, Booth's Stones book, celebrated, appropriately, by novelist Robert Stone in a Salon feature a couple of years back as "a lost treasure," is not his best.
And at the end of one of "Rythm Oil"'s 20 jewels, Booth, in his own precise, peculiar way, proves Stone's case: "Carla was waiting for the limo to come back from taking Johnny Taylor to his hotel when closing time came and she found herself standing on the club's steps.

Stanley Booth, a member of the Rolling Stones' inner circle, met the band just a few months before Brian Jones drowned in a swimming pool in 1968.
Booth weaves a fascinating mosaic from disparate threads: recording sessions; TV appearances; rehearsals; individual shows; hotel rooms and airports; cramped back seats and back stages and, finally, the Baconian nightmare of Altamont.
Booth also captures a cast of characters with the perceptive edge of a great journalist: B.B. King, Gram Parsons, Chuck Berry, the individual Stones and their women and handlers and bodyguards and leeches.
