The first year the Stanley Cup was not contested was 1918, when the influenza epidemic that ravaged the world that year forcing the cancellation of the series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Seattle Metropolitans, with Montreal's "Bad" Joe Hall dying from the flu.
The bands were finally filled up in 1991 when a decision was made to preserve the top band of the large barrel in the Hockey Hall of Fame and introduce a new blank band at the bottom so that the size of the Stanley Cup would not grow further.

As a Canadian, I was saddened to see an American team (loaded with Canuck talent, may I add) win the Cup once again and we're left out of the celebration.
