Auction catalogs for rare and expensive items, such as art, jewelry, postage stamps, and antique furniture, are of interest in and of themselves, for they will frequently include detailed descriptions of the items, their provenance, historical significance, photographs, and so forth.
As their use by collectors became widespread, the catalogs came to define what was and was not a legitimate stamp, since collectors would avoid stamps not described in their catalog.

The most common catalog used by stamp collectors in the United States is the Scott Catalogue.
The catalog can usually be found in your local library so there is not need to buy one until you are at the stage where you have a lot of stamps and do not want to bother using the library copy.
The catalog pictures all the stamps so you can usually find the ones in your collection by checking first the country name and then the denomination or value on the stamp.

If they use the Stanley Gibbons system and you use the Scott system, you may have a "translation" issue, even through both systems are in English.
That is, the single-country catalogs may include more sections, such as postal cards, aerogrammes, and perhaps even postal markings, that the worldwide catalogs do not list.
Another type of stamp catalog is the "part-country," such as the Stanley Gibbons catalog of Great Britain stamps issued only during the reign of Queen Victoria.

After Scott, the most popular catalogues with worldwide listings are Michel and Stanley Gibbons, but they are used mainly for descriptions and values of stamps from the German areas and the British areas, respectively.
Catalogues are printed in the language of the country where they are published and users should be aware that the values in the foreign catalogues are not given in U.S. dollars.
For example, Michel and Yvert-Tellier values are given in Euro dollars and the Stanley Gibbons values are in British pounds.

Stanley Gibbons' store on the Strand, which can best be described as the Tiffany's of the philatelic world.
Though the catalog doesn't show pictures of the stamps, it is worth looking at because it lists stamps issued for not only major events like the Coronation of 1937 and 1953 and the Jubilees and weddings, but also wedding anniversaries, royal tours, and the Queen Mother's 80th-95th birthdays.
Since my visit to the store was only a couple of weeks after the Queen Mother's 100th birthday, they had wonderful displays of commemorative stamps from all over the world and even a couple of magazines with articles about stamps that had been issued throughout her life.

In normal used condition this stamp is cataloged at $24.
This stamp is Stanley Gibbons 26w with a catalog value of £7,000.
Several other Australian Kangaroo and King George V head inverted watermark stamps are also recorded with just one or two copies known, and have high Stanley Gibbons catalog valuations in the £7,000 and higher region.
