Stanley was an American manufacturer of steam engine automobiles.
The company they formed to produce this car was called the Stanley Motor Carriage Company and operated between 1902 and 1917.
The cars made by the company were referred to as Stanley Steamers." When they shifted the steam boiler to the front of the vehicle, the resulting feature was called by owners the "coffin bonnet." In order to cut down on noise, condensers were used, beginning in 1915.

 Stanley Museum To Lead Archaeological
The Stanley brothers, Yankee inventors famous for photographic dry plates and the Stanley Steamer automobile, have long been associated with Kingfield and Lewiston, but they also established a long-time summer residence on Squirrel Island in Boothbay Harbor.
Stanley also built two other cottages there for his daughters, and made a number of civic improvements to the island community: a new pier and breakwater, a standpipe for the village's water supply, and an extensive network of cement sidewalks.
The last improvement is believed to have been brought about in fond deference to Stanley's disabled wife, and it made much of the island wheelchair-accessible before World War I. Stanley's summer cottage and one of the adjacent cottages that he built were destroyed in a row fire in 1932.

The "Stanley Steamer" achieved fame when brother F. Stanley did a mile in 2:11 on a dirt track with a 30 degree incline.
George Eastman bought the rights to the Stanleys' earlier photographic patents, supplying the brothers with capital to manufacture 200 standing orders for the Steamer, which eventually became the "Locomobile." By the time Henry Ford incorporated the Ford Motor Company in 1903, the Stanleys' plant already employed 140 workers.
Like its predecessor horse racing, automobile racing provided the stiff competition which helped to "refine the breed." When the Stanleys brought their 150 horsepower "T. (Thoroughly Educated) Wogglebug" to the 1906 winter races at Ormond Beach, Florida, driver Fred Marriott clocked 127.66 mph, becoming the first to move faster than 2 miles per minute.
