Stanly County is a county located in the state of North Carolina.
It was named for John Stanly of New Bern (1774-1834), who served several terms in the North Carolina House of Commons and two terms (1801-1803, 1809-1811) in the United States House of Representatives.
Stanly County is a member of the regional Centralina Council of Governments.

Stanly was commissioned captain on 25 July 1866, commodore on 1 July 1870, and rear admiral on 12 February 1874.
Stanly returned to Charleston on 7 January 1943 and operated on the east coast and in Guantanamo Bay until 28 February when she rounded Cape Charles and headed for Delaware Bay, where she joined Sante Fe (CL-60) and sailed with the light cruiser for Panama.
Stanly was decommissioned in October 1946 and shifted her berth to Long Beach, Calif., in January 1947.

The "hot spot" for train watching in Stanly County during this exciting period had to be Whitney, where the Yadkin's branch from New Halls Ferry Junction, the WSS, and the industrial spur to the Badin aluminum plant all met.
