 The GULLY NYC Lower East Side Story
The south wall of the Irreplaceable Artifacts building owned by Evan Blum at the corner of Second Avenue and Houston Street, in Manhattan's rapidly gentrifying Lower East Side, collapsed on July 13 as workers were punching large arches in it.
Residents evacuated several months ago from a cracked building on Stanton Street, for example, were not allowed to go in even for a minute to retrieve personal possessions or pets before the building was demolished.
A suit by those Stanton Street residents is pending against the City.

Early this month, the city announced that the weathered building, between Stanton and Rivington Streets, was to be demolished.
For years, a six-story tenement at 184 Forsyth Street was home to Adam Purple, best known for creating an elaborate garden on nearby empty lots, which the city bulldozed in 1986.
Purple, who moved into 184 Forsyth Street in 1972, was a vivid presence on the Lower East Side.

Personally, I still mostly visit the Lower East Side for cheap Mexican food (several decent options on Rivington and Stanton) and an occasional cup of coffee at "Pink Pony" (176 Ludlow, don't overanalyze the name - it's just a cheap French joint).
(It should be noted that in the first half of the 20th century everything up to 14th street - including today's East Village was considered part of the Lower East Side).
The neighborhood has one of the highest concentrations of bars in the city.

The Stanton Street Shul, Congregation Bnai Joseph Anschei Brzezan, is historically significant as one of the few early twentieth-century "tenement synagogue" surviving on New York City' s Lower East Side.
When it was constructed in 1913, the synagogue housed a congregation founded in 1894 by immigrant Jews from the town of Brzezany, Poland.
