P-80 Shooting Star - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star was the first operational jet fighter used by the United States Army Air Forces.
Only four actually made it to Europe, two to England and two to Italy, but when test pilot Major Fred Borsodi, demonstrating the P-80 in England, was killed in a crash caused by a fire in the jet engine, the type was grounded.
When sufficient Sabres were in operation, the Shooting Star was relegated to ground attack and advanced flight training duties and served until the end of hostilities.

Since 1977, the Star Wars universe, conceived by George Lucas, has been explored by authors and artists eager to build on the foundation laid by the blockbuster movies.
The Star Wars Encyclopedia is the essential guide to every detail of the history, planets, vehicles, politics, aliens, and weapons described in countless books, comics, stories, and (of course) movies.
I'm a big fan of George Lucas' Star Wars work, but this is an expensive edition dealing all the novels written on his idea, and doesn't cover anything about Episodes I, II and III.

The Shooting Star was the first USAF aircraft to exceed 500 mph in level flight, the first American jet airplane to be manufactured in large quantities, and the first USAF jet to be used in combat.
In the prototype, no air-conditioning was provided so that the temperature resulting from a combination of the high temperatures of the California desert and sustained high Mach number flight at low altitude caused the interior surfaces of the cockpit and controls to become uncomfortably hot.
In comparison with the drag area of the famous World War II Mustang, the drag area of 3.2 square feet of the F-80A was about 15 percent lower than that of the earlier propeller-driven aircraft.

Undeniably powerful but also intensely disturbing and difficult to take, Star 80 is a film that seems to want to make a statement but also can't seem to decide what that statement should be.
Ultimately, despite the considerable skill and talent of the director and male lead, Star 80 is too off-putting to be the important film it wants to be.
But STAR 80 is actually less about Stratten than it is about Paul Snider, the small-time hustler who discovered, promoted, and married her--and then lost her through a combination of his own hysterical insecurity and her rising fame.

 pulsing cinema review: STAR 80
Enter the obsessive Bob Fosse, whose own adaption Star 80 was not very well-recieved upon its original release but remains probably the most truthful account of the whole affair, if not from a factual standpoint than from a deeply emotional one.
Fosse presents begins the film through a slow build of fake interviews with Stratten (Mariel Hemingway) and other various characters, beginnig with lounge owners and other sordid figures which Snider (Eric Roberts) associated himself with in Canada just before a chance meeting with the then-age fourteen Stratten changed his life forever.
Even Hugh Hefner isn't absolved of guilt; Cliff Robertson's Hefner could almost be seen as a mainstream version of Snider, a pimp who hustles girls in the more legitimate arena of adult publishing.

Jealousy and rejection push Paul over the edge, but Star 80 (the title is taken from Snider's vanity license plates) is no simple tale of male ego gone bad.
The film is a darker telling of the kind of story Boogie Nights would tell nearly 15 years later--both films are set in the late '70s and early '80s, and both deal with the inevitable loss of innocence in a world where innocence cannot survive.
But it is a brilliantly done film, one undimmed by the passage of twenty years--and one that, sadly, will likely be as valid twenty years from now as it is today.
