The first of the series, Star Control: Famous Battles of the Ur-Quan Conflict, featured the basic Spacewar-style melee combat (as it was called, even though the ships actually fired projectile weapons at each other) engine as well as a strategic game with a three-dimensional cluster of stars as the terrain.
It added a large number of species and ship types to the already diverse cast and replaced Star Control I's strategy-based full game with an exploration-oriented space adventure game that included the melee combat of the first game, resource-gathering and diplomacy.

this succeeds in drawing you into the game no end, and makes you feel that you are part of a star trek-style first contact situation.
i personally would have liked to visit the members of the new alliance of free stars (or whatever you chose to call it) and seen how things were going, but alas, i was unable too.
the manual tells you how to control the game (i played it without it though, as i got the manual later than the game.) and the background file is a group of text files explaining what the sentient milleu was, and other such things.

For years now, I have been a proud member of the Star Control SETI@Home group, patiently crunching boring numbers in the hope that one day an Arilou will invite me to one of their famous rollerdisco parties.
However, today I discovered to my shock that the group is basically in the slums, washed up, waiting for death in a smelly dark alley.
Titled "Property of the Crimson Corperation" the track takes the dark atmosphere presented by the original Druuge theme but then adds elements of gloom and hopelessness as well and this is executed successfully.

Ground Control first hit the scene about four years ago but never really made the big splash in an RTS market dominated by Command and Conquer.
Although, the original title didn't reach star status, it was a well respected offering which featured a great 3D engine, zoom facility and some expansive and interesting maps.
That was then, now, Ground Control II: Operation Exodus is here and vast battles sequences, excellently architectures, total camera flexibility and stunning graphics are all par for the course.
