  75 years of 'Star Dust'
Yet a chord of mystery has always underscored Americans' love affair with "Star Dust." The tune is an unlikely candidate for pop immortality, with a complex structure and rambling melodic line -- thick with the jazzy perfume of cornetist Bix Beiderbecke -- that would seem too hip for the room.
"Star Dust" was not an instant hit, and a listen to Carmichael's original record of it tells you why.
The story behind "Star Dust" begins with the self-invented genius that was Carmichael.

 The STARDUST Science
Interstellar dust was the initial solid building material used in formation of the solar system and nearly all the atoms heavier than oxygen now in the Sun and planets were in interstellar grains just before the formation of the solar nebula.
The particles are actually samples of other stars and they contain isotopic records of nucleosynthesis in these stars as well as chemical, morphological, and mineralogical records of the environments and processes that influence the formation and evolution of solid grains in the Galaxy.
Originally the captured dust was to be tagged and cometary dust dynamics to be studied using an acoustic sensor mounted in the base of the capture media to register both time and location of the dust capture nondestructively.

Home Solutions: Dust : ENERGY STAR
Dust comes from several sources and is difficult to eliminate completely.
Increased dust could be a sign that it is time to change a dirty furnace or air conditioner filter or vacuum cleaner bag.
Dust can also be introduced into your home through air leaks in ducts, or air infiltration through leaky doors and windows.

The nebula, filled with dust particles of different sizes, is drifting past the star at a relative speed of about 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) per second.
The nearly straight lines pointing toward the star, which is out of view in the upper right, are the streams of larger particles still zooming toward the star.
The nebula and the star are in the Pleiades star cluster, easily visible to the naked eye on a clear winter evening.

Diamonds | American Museum of Natural History
And the most ancient meteorite material contains star dust, the remnants of the death of stars.
Some of this star dust is extremely tiny bits of diamond, just big enough to be crystals and older than the solar system itself.
Very small "microdiamonds," averaging only 12 micrometers across, were discovered during diamond exploration in a region called the Kokchetav Massif, in northern Kazakhstan, in large slices of metamorphic rock that must have been pushed at least 120 kilometers deep into Earth and returned.

 Star Dust
Because the gas in nebulae is used to make new stars, and dying stars create nebulae from their gas.
The young stars found in HII regions are extremely hot and provide a lot of energy for lighting up nebulae.
Some nebulae are created by dying stars: supernova remnants and the planetary nebulae surrounding white dwarfs.

An image from the Gemini North telescope reveals a disk of dust orbiting a star in a star cluster 900 light-years away.
HILO >> A brown dwarf star orbiting a sunlike star and a disk of dust circling another star in a four-star system are two new discoveries made using the Gemini North telescope on Mauna Kea, astronomers announced yesterday.
Images of the objects were made using adaptive optics, which senses the twinkling of stars caused by air and cancels it, the Gemini North observatory said.

Star dust shows planet potential - The Honolulu Advertiser - Hawaii's Newspaper   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Astronomers using the Submillimeter Array telescope atop Mauna Kea have confirmed that many young stars in the Orion Nebula are surrounded by enough orbiting material to form new planetary systems.
They were called "proplyds" — for "protoplanetary disks" — on the assumption that they consisted of newly formed stars surrounded by a disk of matter from which new planets are forming.
They are among the youngest stars in the galaxy at about 1 million years old.

Spaceflight Now | Breaking News | Planet around the star Vega suggested in dust swirl
Two giant clumps of dust in the ring surrounding Vega may be signatures of an unseen planet orbiting the star in an eccentric orbit.
Observations at millimeter wavelengths indicate that infalling dust is trapped in dynamical resonances by the gravitational influence of a planetary body.
Instead, calculations by the astronomers show that an eccentric planet traps dust in two main concentrations at different distances from the star, at positions outside the planet orbit that are generally not in line with the star.

IOL: Ancient star dust may point to human origins
Washington - Star dust found deep beneath the Pacific Ocean has led German scientists to speculate that a supernova explosion three million years ago might possibly have helped bring about human evolution.
The timing of the star explosion coincides with a change in the climate in Africa, when drier conditions caused forests to retreat and the savannah to emerge.
This time they looked for star dust at a site much deeper, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean near the equator and away from land roughly south of the Hawaiian islands.

The dim red dwarf star is a mere 33 light years away, close enough that the Hubble Space Telescope or ground-based telescopes with adaptive optics to sharpen the image should be able to see whether the dust disk contains clumps of matter that might turn into planets.
AU Mic is the closest dust disk directly imaged since the discovery 20 years ago of a dust disk around beta-Pictoris, a star about 2.5 times the mass of the sun and 65 light years away.
Though the two stars are in opposite regions of the sky, they appear to have been formed at the same time and to be traveling together through the galaxy, Kalas said.

Sun-Like Star, Dust Eclipse Offer Clues to Origins of Our Solar System | SpaceRef - Your Space Reference
Astronomers are announcing today the discovery of a sun-like star which is eclipsed in a way never before seen - not by another star, planet or moon, but by dust grains, rocks and maybe even asteroids orbiting it in a clumpy circumstellar disk.
The star, named KH 15D, is in the constellation of Monoceros and located about 2400 light years from the Earth.
The star was essentially totally blocked for more than 1/3 of the period of the orbiting matter.

SPACE.com -- Comets, Asteroids and Planets around a Nearby Star
The light from AU Mic was blocked so the telescope could see light reflected from dust grains in a disk orbiting the star.
Such clumps have been detected around other stars, but one thing that makes AU Mic interesting is that it is a garden variety star -- its kin make up 85 percent of all known stars.
The dust observations also reveal elliptical patterns that suggest the orbits of the planets are non-circular.
