Evolutionary Futurism in Stapledon’s ‘Star Maker’
Throughout the early portions of Star Maker the cosmic mind is unable to accept the perpetual perishing of civilizations, this waxing and waning nature of reality.
Star Maker, the divine principle of the novel, is hence viewed as evil.
However, when Star Maker is fully conceived in the novel -- the universe ceases to seem meaningless, but is seen as in the grips of an evolutionary creativity in which change is necessary for growth.

Star Maker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The science in Star Maker shows its age, but much of the book is much less dated than one could expect for something written in 1937.
The climax of the book is the "supreme moment of the cosmos", when the cosmical mind (which includes the narrator) attains momentary contact with the "Star Maker" of the title.
The Star Maker is the creator of the universe, but stands in the same relation to it as an artist to his work, and calmly assesses its quality without any feeling for the suffering of its inhabitants.

 Star Maker
Over vast epochs of time, individual creatures and races, and even planets, stars, and galaxies, expand in consciousness and merge telepathically until, in the far future, the Universe as a whole becomes aware – and aware of its creator, the Star Maker.
Moreover, his imagination is broad enough to encompass numerous universes, each with subtle variations, some sterile, others with life, again presaging late twentieth century thought on this issue (see chaotic inflationary theory and many-worlds hypothesis).
Star Maker's influence, and that of its predecessor, are difficult to gauge or overestimate.

Bruce Franklin, Star Maker was left off the syllabus because it would take too long to read -- not because of its length, Franklin explained, but because every couple of pages you'd have to stop and think over for a while what you'd just read.
Indeed, Stapledon's thesis tracks with current intelligent-design theory (the Star Maker is God, though not the Father-God of traditional Christianity), which postulates some sort of rule-making authority for how the universe works.
Eventually, he meets the Star Maker, an intelligence that observes the distress of much of his creation, but has no motivation to intervene to correct it.

The Star Maker, by Olaf Stapledon
This immense tale stretches from the slow thoughts of intelligent gas clouds in the early universe, to what is now called the Omega Point, and past it through the slow starvation of a decaying cosmos.
Star Maker attenuates the nihilism and despair of its early twentieth-century origin by adopting the theme of a fundamentally tragic universe.
Rather than justify fear and worship of Nature like its Romantic counterpart, Frankenstein, Star Maker demands ennobling and tragic comprehension of Nature, a fusion of Nature and Art, and a potent role for life throughout the multiverse.

But the godlike Star Maker is not exactly God, as we see when the scope expands beyond one mere universe to show an endless cycle of creations, many of them being crude and "immature" products of this experimenter's hand.
However, the sheer imaginative scope of this text is phenomenal, an examination of important philosophical themes such as the ability to comprehend the possible purpose of God (the 'Star Maker') masquerading as a mythological history of the universe.

FILM REVIEW -- `Star Maker's' Lens A Bit Out of Focus
Fans of ``Cinema Paradiso,'' the 1988 import about a wise projectionist and his young protegee, are clearly the target audience for ``The Star Maker,'' Giuseppe Tornatore's return to the milieu of simple, everyday folks who dream by the flickering light of a movie screen.
``The Star Maker,'' which opens today at the Clay and March 15 at other Bay Area theaters, promises more of the facile, easy-to-swallow sentiment of ``Paradiso,'' which is a bit of a cheat.
Set in Sicily in 1953, when Europe was still healing from World War II, ``The Star Maker'' introduces Joe Spinelli (Sergio Castellitto), a flim-flam man who covers the Sicilian countryside in a broken-down truck, pretending to be a talent scout for Italian and American films.

Olaf Stapledon's Star Maker - The CHUD.COM Message Boards
To the uninitiated, Star Maker is ostensibly the epic story of one “entity’s” physical (as well as spiritual) journey from some nondescript English hilltop up into the firmament and then beyond: to the very edge of space-time, venturing into the mind of God himself.
Returning to the story, it isn’t difficult to see why so many of the great SF writers view Stapledon’s influence over the genre to be second only to that of H.G. Wells’s.
Star Maker: a remarkable piece of work, too often undervalued IMHO.
