Article: Travel by Jargon, by Ian Creasey
Star travel looks to be some way off yet, and by then it seems likely that computers will have advanced to the point where they can not only fly the ship, but also plug their memoirs on chat shows afterward.
A system for travelling directly from any spot in the universe to any other spot would be extraordinarily useful, and indeed wormholes are so convenient that in order to generate sufficient obstacles for a plot, the writer usually has to invent difficulties to restrict their use.
In Harry Harrison's Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers, the "lambda dimension" is accessed by "kappa radiation" emanating from "cheddite" -- processed cheese.

 Classic Science Fiction Reviews
But Harrison pulls off a minor miracle in Galaxy Rangers, by writing the entire novel is a superheated version of the gosh-wow, boy's-adventure-fiction prose of a hack SF juvenile.
He makes the exposition as clumsy as possible, the dialogue as far from human speech as possible and the characterizations as flat and chauvinistic as possible--all in a manner instantly recognizable to anybody who remembers the kind of SF novel tolerable only to readers who stopped maturing at age 12.
People lucky enough to encounter Galaxy Rangers while it was in print tend to be messianic about it.

SF Signal: REVIEW: Star Smashers Of The Galaxy Rangers by Harry Harrison
Star Smashers Of The Galaxy Rangers starts out with friends Chuck and Jerry working on their home made particle accelerator.
Star Smashers is a parody of the worst 'golden age' space opera had to offer.
As the threats to our hero's, and the galaxy, become larger, they still have little trouble overcoming them, usually after just a few moments of thought.

Now, from a planet orbiting the mysterious OnOff star in the Emergent neighbourhood, there is a transmission from a civilization that has just disovered radio waves.
While both sides try to reach the OnOff system first, there is another complication: the OnOff star has a strange cycle where it is completely dark for 250 years followed by a lighting and Sun-like brightness for the next 60 or so years.
Vinge shows us the aliens through the sympathetic human eyes of Trixia Bonsol through most of the novel (she is responsible for the names given to each `Spider' character), but strips away the anthropomorphic descriptions towards the end of the novel.

Like many science fiction fans, I have a considerable affection for the space operas of writers like E.E. "Doc" Smith, but I would have to admit that they are poorly written, sexist and sometimes - usually unconsciously - racist.
(They succeed because of their imagination - things like galaxy destroying weapons - even though written at a time when Mars was as far as most science fiction was willing to travel.)
The parodic relationship with Smith in particular is very clear at the start, which is based extremely closely on his first novel, Skylark.

The galaxy's star-fleet being led by a souped-up 747 is a delightful image which sticks in my mind from this book.
This is a fun farce, though not nearly as shocking and titillating as it must have been when it first appeared in 1973.

In the mid- to late 1940s, while working as a freelance commercial artist, Harrison collaborated with Wallace Wood, who would soon become one of the world's most influential comic book artists.
This association led to Harrison joining the Hydra Club, a New York professional science fiction group where Harrison met and befriended Damon Knight, who, even then, was an extremely influential figure in the sf community.

Harry Harrison’s rich body of work ranges from the hardest of hard-science fiction adventure novels to merciless spoofs of the genre’s conventions and politics.
Harrison began his career as a commercial artist in the mid-1940s, working in comics as an illustrator and writer and supplying illustrations to genre magazines such as Galaxy Science Fiction.
Influenced by his fellow members of the Hydra Club, a New York group of science fiction professionals, he soon became interested in writing, and sold his first story, "Rock Diver," in 1951.
