 Star Trek Expanded Universe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Star Trek Expanded Universe is an unofficial, fan-created term to describe an extrapolation of events which occur in the Star Trek Universe outside the scope of the television series and feature films.
In a two-part episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, aired in 2005 as ("Affliction" and "Divergence"), this premise was disproved and it was revealed that the change in Klingon appearance was the result of a virus that resulted from military enhancement experiments.
Star Trek: The Animated Series (TAS) was a 22 episode set of animated adventures of the Enterprise crew, which aired originally on NBC from 1973-1974.

Fan fiction is a name given to any Star Trek resource that is not produced with the approval or input of the creators or licensees who create new Star Trek material for Paramount Pictures.
It is illegal to buy or sell "fan-produced" memorabilia for profit, because the copyrights of the name Star Trek, as well as the copyrights of the major names involved, are owned by Paramount.
Some fan productions were created by authors who went on to work on legitimate Star Trek productions, and some production staff have lent their support to these films.

And my understanding is that anything created for Star Trek becomes property of paramount, so we could presumably do stories based in those series if we see any stories that are too cool to pass up.
In December, we'll have the first issue of the Star Trek: The Next Generation miniseries, Perchance to Dream, by Keith R.A. DeCandido, art by Peter Pachoumis and an inker to be named shortly.

He continued to say that the EU tries as much as possible to tie in to his own universe, but sometimes they move into a whole other line of their own.
Being a very strict canon-only fan of Star Wars, I was actually disappointed that Lucas might consider the EU on the same line with his own movies, so now after having read the Starlog interview, I can breathe a sigh of relief and rest easier knowing that that is not true.

This expanded universe consists of the aforementioned animated series, books, comics, video games, etc. The creators of these works are generally free to tell their own stories set in the Star Trek universe, and are free to either keep an existing continuity, or use their own.
There is some consensus among Star Trek fans that the fourth and final season of Enterprise was better than the previous three seasons, and that continuation of the program under the new "mini-arc" writing style introduced in season four would have stood a chance of the series acquiring better ratings during a fifth season.

In other words, if we see a star destroyer in a comic that looks slightly different from the ones in the films, we should be cautious before rushing off to announce that an entirely new class of ship exists.
It tells us that not all the events in the expanded universe are as they would be in the 'real' universe.
The problem is, although parts of the expanded universe 'may' be seperate from the 'real' one, we don't know which parts are which.

 Star Wars - Resolutions - A New Threat - TrekUnited Forum
I am making a 3 part mini series based on Star Wars.
I have only seen the feature films by George Lucas as far as the storyline goes.
And only recently, have I jumped into the realm of the established "Expanded Universe" so when I wrote the script for this episode and very likely the entire series will not jive with what has been established by the typical fan base of Star Wars.
