Topic: Star Trek The Motion Picture

Star Trek: A Motion Picture History, In Film Australia
Indeed, I would have to say that Star Trek: The Motion Picture (as it was called) is probably the worst film of the current set of Star Trek films, and certainly pales in comparison with the warmth and richness of its successors.
Star Trek VI is undoubtedly a film of high quality, and with the introduction of computer effects we see an exciting new edge to Star Trek films that is to take full shape in the future.
Star Trek: First Contact is the type of film that could be totally disassociated with Star Trek, and still be a success.

 Star Trek: The Motion Picture
The most popular of all the Trek soundtracks, this was (finally) re-released last year by Columbia/Legacy, and we at last get to hear it in MOST of it's glory.
Unlike most people, I actually enjoy the movie (Star Trek is SUPPOSED to be philosophical, people!), even though I get sick of the ludicrous excuses just to show special effects, but I enjoy the soundtrack a great deal.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture arrived in the wake of Star Wars and, with Paramount's publicity department in high gear, the general public was expecting something as big, loud, and exciting as George Lucas' 1977 adventure.
Had The Motion Picture merely suffered from a lumbering plot or awkward characterization, it would have been remembered more kindly than is commonly the case.
Perhaps the greatest strength of Star Trek: The Motion Picture is that, despite a badly-paced middle, it boasts a strong beginning and end.

Scifilm -- Reviews, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (1979)
Trek fans were just happy that new material was being produced and would have gone to see just about anything bearing the Trek name and featuring their favorite characters.
Goldsmith's work was of such quality that several themes originating here were used in subsequent Trek incarnations, including the main theme also becoming the theme for Trek's return to the small screen in "Star Trek: The Next Generation".
Also detailed is the mad rush to complete the picture on time, which is described as "miraculous" as to what actually got achieved by the filmmakers.

Now, with the advent of DVDs and the proliferation of special editions, numerous big-budget (and some not-so-big-budget) motion pictures are being given a second life in a format that is often quite different from the original version.
Star Trek - The Motion Picture: Director's Edition is no 2001 (its obvious inspiration - a fact that is more evident here than ever before), but it represents thought-provoking, well constructed science fiction.
Star Trek - The Motion Picture: Director's Edition vaults this movie from a position as one of the weakest entries in the long-running film series to a perch as one of the strongest.

DVD Verdict Review - Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Rather than having a Star Trek that resembled Star Wars with its gee-whiz space battles and clear-cut good vs. evil, audiences were treated to a moody, thoughtful Star Trek: The Motion Picture that had less to do with space opera and had more in common with your average episode of Masterpiece Theater.
This was certainly the case with Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, and it remains the case in 2001.
Star Trek: The Next Generation was made possible by the films, which was made possible by the original show becoming popular in syndication.

Audio Science Fiction Reviews: Star Trek: The Motion Picture Original Soundtrack
ith at least one Star Trek TV program on-the-air nearly every day and an ongoing series of theatrical films and literary tie-ins that seem to multiply like Tribbles, it can sometimes be difficult to remember the excitement sparked by the debut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture two decades ago.

IGN: Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition Review
I don't really hold any of that against the film, as it is the most "trek" of any of the Star Trek films (although The Voyage Home had a lot of the spirit in it).
This first feature-length Star Trek adventure comes just ten years after the end of the original series, so just about everyone on the crew really doesn't look much different, and I think that is one of the plusses in the film.
At 136 minutes, it is the longest of all nine Star Trek films, and the story it tells was really better suited for an episode of the series.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture: The Director's Edition celebrates two things: First, a big, fan-friendly presentation of a movie that Paramount could have released in its original form and still made a profit on.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture is now tighter, somewhat less hollow, and possesses new special effects that mindfully support the movie without worsening the original's over-reliance on effects above human drama.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (20th Anniversary Edition) - Jerry Goldsmith
What is probably the finest score in the history of the entire Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: The Motion Picture stands out as giving the film a soul and atmosphere which it would so desperately have lacked without Goldsmith's superb music.
From the almost impossibly grand fanfare of a main theme to the cavernous music for the alien V'Ger and the romantic music for Ilea it is perhaps his finest score, although with so many to choose from, the debate will continue.
The original film started with the concert arrangement of Ilea's theme as befitted the biblical epics, but The Motion Picture was a lumbering space epic more in the way that 2001 was, than Star Wars.

'The Motion Picture' on the other hand is the most expensive, epic, deep and overall pure sci-fi effort the franchise ever did.
Arriving at a time when audiences were coming off an adventure high from "Star Wars", this film proved a disappointment because it owed more to the likes of "2001" than anything George Lucas has done - its more serous filmmaking than crowd pleasing.
Releasing them in reverse chronological order, all the previous "Star Trek" movie DVDs have been lacklustre affairs with only a trailer or two for extras, no commentary, and very good (but not the highest) quality transfers.

filmcritic.com Movie Review: Star Trek: The Motion Picture
The rule with Star Trek films is even-numbered films are good, odd-numbered are bad -- and the first film in the series is no exception.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released at a time when sci-fi movies were expected to be long, sluggish, arty epics like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Dune.
To achieve the desired length and artiness, the producers of Star Trek: TMP hired director Robert Wise -- best known for overlong, dull classics like The Sound of Music -- and chose a script which was long on dialogue but short on action or character development.

Still, I appreciated the detective story (something which is not very often a topic in Star Trek) and the revelation that it's a plot by both Federation and Klingons.
One thing that will always distinguish Star Trek from such action mass products is that here is an overall serious tone, stories about characters and an attempt to make a point beyond the mere entertainment.
