NYPOST.COM Movie Reviews: FORCEFUL RETURN OF GEORGE LUCAS' SERIAL THRILLER By LOU LUMENICK
THE Force is back with "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones"- the most exciting episode in the series since "The Empire Strikes Back" - which closes the first Tribeca Film Festival today prior to its national opening on Thursday.
"Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones," the first blockbuster shot entirely on digital video, is a technological landmark that couldn't look or sound better.
But that's getting way ahead of the complex story, which takes place 10 years after "Phantom Menace" and two decades before "A New Hope," as the original "Star Wars" movie is now known.

TIME Magazine: Star Wars Episode II
Now, with Star Wars: Episode IIAttack of the Clones opening May 16, the Anakin fable gets to the middle, the meat, the real story.
Clones is populated with hundreds of computer-generated creatures, from new digital stars like the four-armed diner chef Dexter Jettster to familiars like Yoda, Watto the Junkman—and that vexing critter Jar Jar Binks, around whom the disappointment in Phantom Menace crystallized.
For the past three years, as he ruled his multimedia empire from the palatial redoubt of Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, Calif., Lucas has dwelt in the lovely dream that his 1999 Star Wars movie, Episode I—The Phantom Menace, was universally loved.

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones is the the second part of the prequel trilogy which began with Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and ends with Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
It is the first Star Wars film which used a high definition digital 24 frame system for most of the movie's live action scenes.
Since the original drafts for Star Wars were written in the 1970s, this could have been a political statement as to what a nuclear war would mean.

Review: Star Wars (Episode II): Attack of the Clones
Lucas has described Episode II as "a love story", and, to a certain extent, it is. There's no denying that one of the key aspects is the deepening relationship between Amidala and Anakin.
In fact, the only age group who will probably like Episode II less than Episode I are those under 10, who may be frightened or intimidated by the darkness and intensity of this outing.

Lucas attains warp speed with fast-paced 'Attack of the Clones'
The news about the new "Star Wars" movie, "Episode II -- Attack of the Clones," is mostly very good.
It's a considerable improvement over the somewhat underwhelming "Episode I" that returned George Lucas' space fantasy to the screen in 1999: faster-paced, more visually opulent, better cast and pulled off with a much more confident directorial flair.
In between are a half-dozen action sequences, enough outlandish new creatures to occupy toymakers for the next century, a humorous cameo by Yoda, the meeting of R2-D2 and C-3PO and a new embodiment of the Dark Side of the Force in the villainous Count Dooku (Christopher Lee).

Unless you're a bit of a Star Wars geek and you've maybe read a few of the prequel expanded universe novels here and there, even the action scenes can lose a bit of their clout.
