After the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY and the subsequent death of Emperor Palpatine, the Empire fragmented and Coruscant was lost to the Rebel Alliance, which gave birth to the New Republic.
After years of war, the Empire was finally reorganized in 8 ABY under the leadership of Bacharan Valak.
Utilizing the Death Star III, Valak swept across a large portion of Republic territory, eventually capturing Coruscant in 9 ABY and returning the Empire to its former glory.

MUSHes catered more to the roleplay crowd, who saw the real-time, multi-user and customizable server as a virtual world in which characters could be created, whole genres reproduced, and drama and story played out for free with entire groups separated in space, but not in their love for story.
MUSHes can be built like buildings, with rooms, exits, special commands to simulate a comlink in someone's virtual hand, or they can describe the vastness of space, the movement of ships through space, and the battles that can make galactic history.

Their changes may or may not affect your MUSH in particular, but it's best to apply them anyway, because if you're running patch 1, and patch 2 is useless but patch 3 is not, you can't just apply patch 3 to patch 1 and get something beautiful.
Whenever you @shutdown the MUSH, or startup the MUSH, it copies the currently existing outdb.Z to indb.Z. maildb.Z is not affected by startup or shutdown, as it is changed as people send and delete mail, and the MUSH keeps only one copy of it.
I tried running a MUSH on a recent release of SOlaris, and had absoulutely no luck doing anything, thanks to some kind of conflict between Solaris' compiler's setting between ELF and a.out binaries...some mysterious guy came in and fixed it, and it was a bizzare machine besides, so it could've just been me.

Not all MUSHes, however, restrict themselves to a specified theme, and offer character interaction in a free form environment which has its details chosen by the players, allowing them to select the situation and setting that best suits their mood and roleplaying (often referred to as RP).
Many MUSH Wizards choose to use softcode to write the global commands which are unique to their MUSH, or which are not included within the hardcode of the codebase.
MUSHing can be an entertaining and rewarding pastime, allowing players to express their creativity and literary skills while also enjoying the company of other players in recreating a world or setting which they both have an interest.

When I began coding on Star Wars MUSH in 1993, I was armed with Amberyl's MUSH Manual and a copy of the PennMUSH help files, painstakingly printed out on my dot-matrix printer.
Every piece of code on the MUSH should be evaluated for its usefulness before it goes into "production", and you should review your commands periodically to see if any of them have fallen into disuse or have become out of date.
One last comment, which is perhaps the most important one of all: The main purpose of MUSH code is to enhance Roleplay on the MUSH.

Anyone who's seen the Star Wars movies should know what the New Republic is, but just in case, you can get to it here.
Though the soldiers of the movement are loyal to Emperor Osbourne and the New Order, their lack of initiative in the fight against the New Republic has lead them to dissatisfaction, and retirement of hundreds of Imperial naval officers, as well as some of the conscripted Imperial Stormtroopers.
Some of them simply returned to their lives, but many of them joined and created the movement, originally manifested as a mercenary group, then as a starship company; legitimately, they are still a well-known galactic shipyard, Sigma Star Industries, though under the front exists a highly trained and lethal force of Imperial loyalists and nonconformists.
