Atlas (star) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Atlas is a triple star system in the Pleiades open cluster (M45).
The primary component, Atlas A, is a blue-white B-type giant with an apparent magnitude of +3.62.
Atlas also has a dimmer magnitude +6.8 companion, Atlas B, at a separation of 0.4 arcseconds or at least 52 Astronomical Units away.

All that was lacking was a nice inexpensive atlas to accompany the binoculars.
This 10 map atlas of the night sky is drawn by Wil Tirion and us based upon the Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogs with a stellar limiting magnitude of 6.5.
Atlas includes a set of seasonal star maps to help orient the user to the night sky throughout practically the entire populated world.

AAVSO: Variable Star of the Month, R Hydrae
The variable star R Hydrae has the distinction of being the third Mira-type variable to be discovered, falling in behind omircon Ceti (also known as Mira, which is the prototype of the class) found in 1596 and chi Cygni found in 1686.
The star was noted as a 6th magnitude star, but was overlooked as a source of variability.
The ultimate fate of the star, and the rate at which a star evolves, is greatly dependent on the mass of the star.

UBVRI Standard Star Fields for WIYN
For fields that include several standard stars, the telescope should be pointed at the coordinates of the field center to ensure that all stars are included in the frame.
A table lists fields in the atlas with direct links to finding charts that should be very useful to observers wishing to include many standards in their photometric calibrations without having to pay the substantial penalty in overhead time inherent in observing single-star fields.
Proper exposure length for a standard star field is a relatively complex topic exacerbated by the fact that the large aperture of WIYN leads to exceedingly short exposures for many stars (especially late-type or highly reddened stars).

Astronomical Leage - Reflector Book Review: Millenium Star Atlas
It is the first atlas to include orientations of all plotted galaxies, and the first atlas to include galaxy clusters.
Most amateur astronomers prefer an atlas in which the sky is depicted continuously in decreasing right ascension from the left-hand page to the right-page of each two-page spread of charts.
In the Millenium Star Atlas, on the other hand, within each right-ascension gore, the charts work their way from the north pole to the south pole as you would read a page of text.

Stars with radial velocity excursions in excess of 35 km/sec are noted as "SB1?" since such large variations are probably related to binary motion.
These results are generally consistent with the expectation that the runaway stars and some of the field stars were ejected from their birthplaces in clusters by processes which tend to disrupt binaries.
Subsequent perturbations from cluster stars cause a decrease in the semimajor axis of the double binary and an increase in eccentricity.

Buried in the center of the atlas is the table of Messier objects, which are a set of galaxies, star clusters, and nebulae that are especially good objects for the small telescope.
The atlas also contains numerous tables, including tables for the characteristics of the planets and their moons, tables of the nearest and the brightest stars, tables of the different types of variable star.

SAN DIEGO — An ancient star atlas lost for centuries and a cutting-edge atlas of the modern universe were unveiled Tuesday by scientists at the American Astronomical Society meeting.
Hidden in plain sight for centuries, the star atlas was found on a statue in Italy's National Museum of Archaeology in Naples.

These maps are more readable than ever, giving visual precidence to the stars themselves rather than labels, grid lines, etc. A thoughtful touch was to print the charts with a generous gutter margin so that stars near the celestial equator don't get trapped out of sight down in the spine of the book.

In star hopping, one typically starts with a finder scope with the wider field of view, finds the correct location, and then zeros in on the selected object with a lower powered (but typically wider field of view) eyepiece before going to higher powers for observation.
Sky Atlas 2000.0 is often the first "serious" star atlas an amateur moves into when they decide its time to really start chasing down objects beyond the "big and bright" or Messier objects.
Computer based star charts can offer a chart reflecting the "zoomed in" field of view of your favorite eyepiece for those instances wherein you are trying to identify the individual members of galaxy groups and clusters.

The twelve constellations of the Zodiac consist of (Northern Hemisphere) the Fish, the Sword, the Destrier, the Chalice, the Natheireun, the Coffer, and (Southern Hemisphere) the Spider, the Scepter, the Serpent, the Scythe, the Comhach, the Bow.
In illuminated star atlases, the species of the Knight varies greatly, depending upon the region in which the atlas was made (and its intended audience), but the Repense depict this as a horse of Avoirdupois, driving off the serpentine Daemon ("Naga"), the Sea Monster ("Kraken"), and the Great Beast.
This is a relatively new addition to the star atlases, as in ancient charts, these stars were not considered bright enough (positioned as they are against the hazy stream of the Spilled Wine) to warrant a constellation of their own.
