Star catalogue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The catalogue was compiled by Annie Jump Cannon and her co-workers at Harvard College Observatory under the supervision of Edward Pickering, and was named in honour of Henry Draper, whose widow donated the money required to finance it.
Stars numbered 1–225300 are from the original catalogue and are numbered in order of right ascension for the 1900.0 epoch.
Stars in the range 225301–359083 are from the 1949 extension of the catalogue.

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory catalogue is a photographic atlas of the sky, complete to about ninth magnitude, as a result of which there is considerable overlap with the Henry Draper catalogue.
The proper motion of a star is the motion of the position of the star in the sky (the change in direction in which we see it, as opposed to the radial velocity) after eliminating the improper motions of the stars, which affect their measured coordinates but are not real...
When two stars are so nearly in the same direction as seen from Earth that they appear to be a single star to the naked eye but may be separated by the use of telescopes, they are referred to as a double star.

Star Catalogue Auxiliary Product Glossary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Note : the stars selected as suitable for mission planning are characterised by a linear relationship between temperature and magnitude; this linear relationship is defined by two couples of temperature and corresponding magnitude : fields (5,8) and (6,9).
The star tracker magnitude limit is 2.4 for stars of temperature of about 30 000 K. Since the GOMOS star tracker operates in the IR region, it cannot follow such weaker stars (blue stars), whose spectrum is strongly concentrated in the UV region.
A star is considered as double and labelled as D if within the maximum angular separation, there is another star having a visual magnitude lower or equal to field 22 (current value is set to 7).

 Star Names
Star names are either of ancient origin, of more recent historical origin, or are assigned by astronomical organizations under the umbrella of the International Astronomical Union (the organization of professional research astronomers).
The most commonly used catalogue for fainter (as well as brighter) stars is the Henry Draper (HD) Memorial Catalogue, which serially numbers stars through roughly tenth magnitude to the east of the vernal equinox (according to right ascension in the year 1900) independently of declination.
The HD catalogue, while a general tool for star names, is also a specialty catalogue, and was created to list the spectral classes of over 300,000 stars.

CANOPUS 97/12 - New and Upcoming Star Catalogue   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
This used to be the catalogue of choice for the northern hemisphere, since it had twice as many stars as the SAO catalogue, and the positions were more accuracte.
For the star positions, the GSC v1.1 used as the reference net the AGK3 in the north and the SAO in the south, there being no other reference catalogues available when the plates were scanned in the 1980s.
As a result, in the corners of the plates, the star positions are frequently off by 2"-3", plus having the general errors caused by the old star catalogues.

Almagest Star Catalogue for Guide users
The Almagest Star Catalogue was published in Alexandria around 150 AD, as part of the famous Almagest, the book in which the great Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolomaeus presented his geocentric theory of the planets.
The epoch for the catalogue was assumed to be 140 BC.
The size of the star symbol corresponds to the magnitude in the catalogue, while the size of the 'X' is also related to the brightness.

Stars of the second type are given the same 3-letter discovery designation but a new number, starting with 9001, to indicate that they originally had a different designation.

This catalogue contains objects in the magnitude range 7-16 and the classification was biased to prevent the use of a non-stellar object as a guide star.

In addition, many of the false objects due to artifacts around the halos and diffraction spikes of the bright stars were identified and corrected as well as a number of reported errors.

The Observer | Travel | On the Silk Road to Tamerlane and Uzbek pop
Able warrior, enlightened ruler, keen hunter and fond of a party, Ulug Beg was above all a man of science.
Blessed with an extraordinary memory and a love of mathematics, from 1424 to 1429 he designed and ordered the construction of an astronomical observatory without equal anywhere, which he proceeded to use to create a star catalogue with more than 1,000 entries, a task which no one since Ptolemy had attempted.
In the process he calculated the length of the year to within 58 seconds of modern electronic calculations and made various other discoveries that, like those of Galileo two centuries later, challenged the religious dogma of his day.
