Article - Chronicling Riddick: Star Treatment // Xbox /// Eurogamer
The team at Starbreeze Studios, developer of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay (preview, screenshots), arguably set off on their path into the world of licences without a solution to the problem either - just as so many like Saffire had done before them.
Interaction with Vin Diesel and Tigon Studios meant that the game was firmly imbued with the spirit of the film and particularly the character, which Diesel himself has professed to hold very close to his heart.
The question of whether the Starbreeze and Tigon style of collaboration would work all the time is difficult to answer, because from our conversations with the team it appears that more or less every item of any importance was agreed on perfectly amicably.

This is beneficial as playing in the first-person assists with certain attacks as well as surveying the landscape for switches that open doors and potions that increase health.
While it is quite generous of the folks at Starbreeze to incorporate both views, each can be frustrating to the point of having to constantly switch between them in order to find the best way to attack an enemy.
Because of the sometimes-frustrating camera, attacking a crew of enemies is a pain in the nether region and mastering the control scheme for each of the different playable characters takes a little bit of time to learn -- a luxury in any of the battle sequences that you simply don't have.

11:33 We've just had official confirmation that Starbreeze Studios, developers of the epic Chronicles of Riddick, are working on a next generation console game based on the popular The Darkness comic, which will be published by Majesco and is set to appear on Xbox 2 in 2006.
This story actually goes back to April, when California-based Union Entertainment said they'd hired Starbreeze Studios to begin work on an adaptation of The Darkness, the popular US comic by Marc Silvestri, Garth Ennis and David Wohl which is published by Top Cow comics, and features a 21-year-old assassin who can control shadows.
This was followed by Majesco's announcement in November that they had signed Starbreeze to develop a next-gen console title for a release in 2006.

DailyGame Reviewers Choice: Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay [Xbox]
But Starbreeze Studios and Vivendi Universal have shattered that stereotype with The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, a first-person Xbox game that’s one of the best console games to release in 2004.
You might remember Starbreeze Studios as the developers of Enclave, one of the Xbox’s most underrated games and, in the eyes of many, one of its best-looking.
The main character has a zoom feature built-in to his eyes, and although it sounds somewhat cheesy, it’s probably a poetic license Starbreeze took simply so players can look into the distance (heck, even at a nearby wall) and watch the imagery have no graphical degradation.

Starbreeze Studios, the development team behind the critically acclaimed "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay," is hard at work on another title that should appease fans.
While "The Darkness" is a separate franchise based on the Top Cow comic series, the game is based on a next-generation version of the Riddick engine; and, like that game, is a first-person shooter heavy on story and unique gameplay elements.
But Starbreeze has a few more features in store that should differentiate the game from the rest of the shooters on the way.

Licensed games, at their best, have become the type of thing studios do to earn a reputation for themselves in the industry before moving on to make "real" games.
In creating this game, the team at Starbreeze Studios (responsible for the pretty-but-flawed Enclave) have absolutely nailed what a movie-based game should be: Game first, movie second.
They’ve taken an existing intellectual property and used it to make a genuinely compelling videogame by taking all the elements from the films that could make the transition seamlessly (such as the character himself and the general universe) and re-establishing them in a world tailor-made for their own needs as game developers.
