Oils bearing the ILSAC Certification Mark, also called API Starburst symbol (see attached for description of API Starburst symbol), on the front of the oil container will be converting over to this performance level during the second half of 2004.
All oils licensed by API to display the Starburst symbol must meet the new requirements by April 30, 2005.
To tell whether an oil which has the API Starburst symbol is also ILSAC GF-4, it may be necessary to look for the API S designation (usually found in the donut-shaped symbol on the back of an oil container).

This symbol indicates that the oil has been certified by the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) as the correct type of oil for gasoline engines in passenger cars and light trucks.
To qualify for the starburst symbol, oils must meet the energy conserving II requirements.
GF-3 was introduced in late 2001 and claims a.5% fuel economy improvement, a 40% reduction in oil consumption, a 25% increase in oil life, better oxidation stability and protection against high-temperature deposits.

Each of those oils met the industry's latest standards, as certified by a starburst symbol on the container.
The oil industry has devised a starburst symbol (described at the bottom of this article) to certify that a particular motor oil meets the latest industry requirements for protection against deposits, wear, oxidation, and corrosion.
The starburst on the label means the oil meets API (American Petroleum Institute) Service SH requirements - the latest, most advanced formulation.

Also look for he API Starburst certification mark, which tells you that the product you are buying has met all the current performance specifications established by the oil industry, and the vehicle and engine manufacturers, for protection against deposits, wear, oxidation, and corrosion.
The starburst also indicates that the oil passes ILSAC/GF-1 standards developed by the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee, a US-Japanese group.
The API Starburst certification mark allows you to easily identify those motor oils that have passed a comprehensive series of performance tests and product quality audits.

One other 10W30 had the certification symbol but all the rest of the full synthetics were 5W50 and none had the "starburst" certification symbol.
The second symbol is the API Certification;the 'starburst',which is on front of container for those oils that meet internationally agreed standard, which currently is ILSAC-GF2 for use in gasoline engines. The standard applies to regular and synthetics.
It seems that the starburst mark designates oils approved for use in engines equipped with the latest emmissions control equipment, so I would suggest that if you are in an area with emmissions inspections, or just to keep the air cleaner, you use the starburst marked oils.

Already that mouthful has been replaced by a simple term: "the starburst symbol." The starburst symbol shows the starburst pattern around the outside of a ring.
Previously, the American Petroleum Institute (API) service classification symbol, known as the "the doughnut," was used by consumers to select an oil.
The starburst symbol is currently used for viscosity ratings of 5W-30 and 10W-30, the only ones meeting the requirements now.

I forget exactly what the Starburst is for, but most all oils at least have a form of the 'circle'.
The circle symbol reads 'API approved' (or similar) across the top, has the rating othe oil in the middle, and will either be blank or read 'Friction enhancers' (or similar) across the bottom.
SuperTech might not have the 'starburst' even if it is still ok for Gas engines and, while it might not have that particular symbol, it should still have the regular 'API certified' symbol, rating it just as good as any other oil.

These symbols, created by the American Petroleum Institute (API), are the "starburst" and "donut." The starburst symbol normally appears on the front of the container and indicates that the oil meets the requirements of domestic and Japanese vehicle manufacturers.
The most recently issued standard by this group is ILSAC GF-2, which will appear in the center of the starburst for all oils certified for use in gasoline engines.

Definition: Oils that display the starburst symbol must meet the requirements of ILSAC GF-2 to display the mark.
Oil must meet requirements for low-temperature pumping/cranking (essentially oil must be a l0W or lower W grade), gelation index (a measurement of the low-temperature gelation tendency of the oil), and contain a maximum level of phosphorus (to ensure catalyst durability);
Must pass engine test performance (deposit and wear control, rust control, shear stability, corrosion protection, oxidation control) as well as requirements for volatility, foaming tendency, homogeneity miscibility, high-temperature deposits and filterability.

Quaker State: Car Care Tips and Info: Is it Worth Paying More for Synthetic Oil?
The starburst was defined by an organization of American and Japanese automakers — the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC).
The look of the Starburst was jointly developed by the motor oil and automobile industries in an effort to make it easier for the consumer to identify motor oils that meet the minimum performance requirements deemed necessary the automakers.
Due to the fact that the ILSAC requirements include a fuel economy requirement, the ILSAC Starburst symbol will typically be found only on lighter viscosity grades of motor oil such as SAE 5W-20, SAE 5W-30 or SAE 10W-30.

Only paying licensees are allowed to use the trademark, which is shown in most new car manuals to advise drivers on the correct oil for their passenger cars.

Now, model year 2004 manuals will advise drivers to use oil that displays both the starburst and GM 6094M.
