 Stardust Memories
The accusation that Stardust Memories reveals Allen's own hostility to his audience (a view based mainly on his depiction of sycophantic film buffs and adulating fans) does not do justice to the metacritical nuances of the film.
Moving from the monochrome nostalgia of Manhattan (1979), Stardust Memories shifts register and plays upon the art-house associations of black and white; the film assumes a chromatic cinematic gravity, contributing to the more general and reflexive interest of the film in directorial authorship.
By creating a film within a film, and discreetly sliding the narrative of Stardust in and between the "inner" film's conception and consumption, Woody Allen looks at the interchange between creative process, cult personality and critical pretension.

RollingStone.com: David Bowie : Ziggy Stardust Rises Again : News
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars was shot by D.A. Pennebaker (Don't Look Back) at the Hammersmith Odeon theater in London in 1973; the film captures Bowie and his "Spiders" performing, as well as backstage.
The film that captures David Bowie's final performance as Ziggy Stardust will be revived on July 10th at the Film Forum in New York City, before revisiting theaters nationwide later this year.
The revival is part of a celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the release of the album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, which first hit stores in June 1972.

Stardust Memories - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stardust Memories is a film written and directed by Woody Allen which was released in 1980; Allen considers this to be one of his best films in addition to The Purple Rose of Cairo.
Stardust Memories largely draws influence from the films of Federico Fellini, one of Allen's favorite directors.
Among the extended cast members was an ingenue named Sharon Stone, in her first film appearance, future political commentator Alan Colmes ("Hannity and Colmes," the Fox News Channel) in his first role, and a young Brent Spiner, later famous as the character "Lieutenant Commander Data" on the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation.

 Stardust Memories
Stardust Memories is Allen's most self-confessional film (I will later make a strong case Stardust is more autobiographical than even Husbands and Wives or Deconstructing Harry, if only because it manages to cover a wider array of topics and ideas, particularly Allen's career and his responsibilities as an artist).
Stardust Memories' opening sequence is the ending of a rough cut screening of a famous film director's new film, this time a drama instead of comedy.
Stardust Memories is Allen's best, most thorough, and most effective balancing of comedy and drama, surpassing even Crimes and Misdemeanors and Hannah and Her Sisters.

 Stardust Memories
At the center of Stardust Memories are the thoughts of Woody Allen’s character Sandy Bates, a celebrated film director attending a far-flung festival of his work, conflicted over his next film, unable to choose between the women in his life.
For audiences and critics in 1980, Stardust Memories was Allen’s most difficult film yet, a challenging, allusive excursus on the creative intellect prompted by box office kudos and full of the Freudianism and in-joking that Allen had made his own.
Stardust Memories is a cacophony of voices from movie executives to UFO spotters, fans to psychoanalysts, visiting aliens to Sandy’s relatives.

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1973)
'Ziggy Stardust and the Spider's From Mars' is a concert film and nothing more, and you watch concerts on TV or at the movies for a *better* view of the performance, not a lesser view.
'Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars' gives you a David Bowie concert from the perspective of an audience member with the worst seats in the house.
D.A. Pennebaker's sole moment of visual appeal was probably his 1953 short film 'Daybreak Express,' a jazz-scored time-lapse ride across New York City's transit rails from the perspective of a metro train.

Stardust Memories inspires that kind of frustration, though, because it's the first Woody Allen film in which impotence has become the situation rather than the problem.
Probably, but no matter; he clearly intends Stardust Memories to be his 8-1/2, and it develops as a portrait of the artist's complaints.

 Operation Green Cheese
Spurred on by Soviet space successes, Stardust went into high gear, producing its first results in 1962, in the form of the Mercury "flights." Spaceflight footage was produced by the brilliant young director Stanley Kubrick, whose use of stark lighting would later prove ideal in imagining the lunar landscape.
By that time, however, Stardust was well under way.) Most of the famous props used in the space spectaculars were dispersed among science museums, and the book was quietly closed on an unusual chapter in US history.
Operation Stardust, irreverently dubbed "Green Cheese," commenced in 1958.

The film's screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky transformed his own original teleplay into a successful major motion picture - and the modest film remains one of the best examples of the cinematization of a television play.
By film's end, he and another homely 29 year old Brooklyn schoolteacher and female wallflower are liberated - both are triumphant over their respective limitations.
A modest, black and white film in an era of wide-screen color epics, its critical acclaim and box-office success were phenomenal - its $340,000 production budget yielded over $5 million in gross proceeds.

The Ziggy Stardust Companion: Purple Stardust by Christopher Barton
Bowie: Ziggy Stardust is considered by many to be Bowie’s breakthrough hit, although he enjoyed a few successes before this album; notably, the 1969 song and album “Space Oddity”, the title tune being about a future gone wrong (the title itself being a take-off on Stanley Kubrick’s classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey).
While Purple Rain was a concept based on autobiographical events, Ziggy Stardust has been described as a fictional character, which David Bowie began to transform into – the reverse construction of Prince’s character of The Kid.
Purple Rain: The album/film has widely been described as a “semi-autobiographical” portrait of Prince, under the characters name of The Kid.

Musically minded director Pennebaker, the man responsible for the Bob Dylan doc Don't Look Back, here gives Bowie the film treatment with a largely concert-based account of his final performance under the Ziggy Stardust alter ego (something which erroneously led many to believe the glam rocker was quitting music altogether).
Although there is some backstage footage of the gig, which took place at the Hammersmith Odeon on 3 July 1973, it's pretty much the show all the way, as Bowie and his band romp through all their classics ranging from 'Space Oddity', 'Aladdin Sane' and 'Changes' through to the film's title track.
Although it was shown on TV in 1974, it didn't receive a cinema release for a further nine years.

 LABYRINTH - SUPERBIT DVD
To be fair, Labyrinth holds some interest as an artifact of a time in filmmaking that was dominated more by invention than mainframes: latex and engineering lend a palpable feeling of weight missing in the glorified screensavers of the last several years.
While the film is a nostalgic hallmark for many (and so is Pete's Dragon, it occurs), cinematically and artistically, better to revisit Henson's flawed but breathing The Dark Crystal.
As riffs on Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz go, Jim Henson's Labyrinth is a painfully dated, shockingly un-magical romp through a fragmented netherworld populated by Ziggy Stardust and a horde of little people wearing giant papier-mâché heads.
