Those four towns were Hradcany (the Castle, west of the Vltava), Mala Strana (the Lesser Quarter, south of the Castle), Stare Mesto (the Old Town, on the east bank opposite the Castle) and Nove Mesto (the New Town, further south and east).
The city underwent further expansion with the annexation of Josefov in 1850 and Vysehrad in 1883, and at the beginning of 1922, another 37 municipalities were incorporated, raising the city's population to 676,000.
Some of its many tourist attractions are Stare Mesto, various places connected to Franz Kafka, Mala Strana, Hradcany with St. Vitus's Cathedral, the Charles Bridge, and the Lennon Wall.

Stare Mesto shared in the boom when Charles IV gave Prague a Gothic face befitting its new status as capital of the Holy Roman Empire.
To ease the devastation of frequent flooding by the Vltava River, the level of the town was gradually raised, beginning in the 13th century, with new construction simply rising on top of older foundations.
The only intrusions into Stare Mesto's medieval layout have been the appropriation of a huge block in the west for the Jesuits' massive college, the Klementinum, in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the 'slum clearance' of Josefov, the Jewish quarter, at the end of the 19th century.
