The movie centers around the Robinson family just before and during their journey to a distant star system to setup another planet as the next earth.
The movies only drawback is the script, which has some strong points in the first half, but falls behind in the last half in a confusing time travel plot.
Later in the movie when he is discovered aboard the spaceship, he develops the whiny accent somewhat like the Dr. Smith had in the original TV series.

The Stargate contains all the symbols which were present on the outer circle of the artefact, and Jackson identifies the point of origin; previously undetected as it does not contain as much detail as the symbol on the cartouche.
When O'Neil orders Jackson to ready the Stargate for the return trip, Jackson explains he is unable to; he requires the specific co-ordinates for Earth's Stargate and the point of origin, which were not near the Stargate as Daniel expected.

Stargate (movie) - SGCommand - A Wikia wiki
The movie begins with a quick flashback to an archeological dig in Giza, Egypt in 1928, where Professor Langford discovers an artifact, a large (10 meters in diameter?) metal ring with symbols all along the edge with nine chevrons, that has been protected by coverstones.
After Daniel quickly discovers which symbol on the gate is the point of origin, the gate is activated, creating a wormhole between it and another gate "on the other side of the known universe." An initial probe is sent through the gate, revealing the planet on the other side can support human life.
The original movie had a different actors playing some of the key roles than in the later series as well as some characters who never appeared in the series.

In the original movie, starring Kurt Russell as Colonel Jack O'Neil and James Spader as Doctor Daniel Jackson, the stargate was discovered by a European archaeologist (apparently from France) working a dig near the Pyramids of Giza in 1924.
The stargate universe is filled with many different species, almost all of which are humanoid in appearance, and most of which have some ancient connection to Earth.
Although the movie was almost completely serious and thought-provoking in concept (despite a couple of scenes obviously intended to evoke laughter in the audience), the television shows offer light-hearted jabs at their own inconsistencies and mistakes.

Stargate is a sci-fi story that has just gone from strength to strength, and now the co-executive producer, Brad Wright is talking about the possibility of a new movie, amongst other things.

For a movie that didn't rely too heavily on special effects, it was a little disappointing to see so-so quality during some of the FX sequences.
Out of all of the memorable moments in "Stargate", the most clever and well-executed one was the switcharoo near the end when the transporter/elevator takes James Spader and his wife away from Ra and simultaneously decapitates Ra's guard and delivers the head to him/her back on the pyramid ship.
As far a humour is concerned, this movie had plenty of it to provide relief from the tension.

 Stargate Movie Review
STARGATE is a movie from out of a time warp, and I'm not just talking about the plot.
The late 70s and early 80s were the heyday of grand scale science fiction/fantasy epics, both on the big screen and the small screen, produced to cash in on the success of the STAR WARS trilogy.
Once we get to the other side of the stargate, things are still wildly uneven, and we're not even talking about those plausibility questions that plague most science fiction fare.

It's a great movie to watch on the big screen---the effects are really cool and sometimes believable.
The plot itself is sometimes naive, but there are a few good things one can get out of this movie, one of them being the fact that subjectives will always subvert.

There was talk of doing a straight-up sequel to “Stargate” when the Kurt Russell/James Spader film first hit big — at one time, with original director Roland Emmerich, who said at the time that “There has been plenty of talk about doing a sequel, from everyone who worked in the first one.
I'm guessing, a "Stargate 2" would feature the cast of the TV series - maybe both series' - because that's where the audience is these days.

Stargate SG-1 Solutions Companion Site - Stargate The Movie sequel?
Our main site is reporting Dean Devlin, co-creator of the Stargate Movie, in an interview with SciFi Wire, states that he's in talks with MGM to create sequels of the original Stargate movie starring Kurt Russell and James Spader.
I'm sure some fans of the movie and not the tv show may want to see the sequels, but I think after ten years, the series of Stargate is more "canon" than the movie.
Devlin's carefulness in stating the movie wouldn't hurt the series's success would be a savvy negotiating tactic, as well as taking advantage of the bankability of the long lived series.
