Topic: Starkweather (band)

In the News (Sun 27 Dec 09)

  Matt Johnsen Dot Com
Starkweather are a recently reunited Philadelphia group that I saw a few times "back in the day." I have their two CDs, and I remembered them being pretty good when I saw them in the mid 90s, but I'd hardly call myself a Starkweather fanboy.
When the band went on, the crowd in the main room swelled like a sponge tossed in the bathtub, and in a matter of minutes, it was so crowded that I couldn't even stand next to Nancy because someone had wedged themselves in between us.
The guitar sound was atrocious, but the band was pretty insane nonetheless, and I was VERY impressed by the rhythm section (especially the bass player in the too-cool vintage Thought Industry shirt.) About five or ten minutes into their set, the band blew the main circuit, and everything went dark and quiet.

Long regarded as one of the first bands to blend metal and hardcore, Starkweather are still an untapped band for the masses.
Formed in 1990, Starkweather have several out-of-print recordings to their credit including a limited self-titled seven-inch (Inner Rage Records, 1993), Crossbearer (Too Damn Hype, 1994), Into the Wire (Edison Recordings, 1995), the 1996 split seven-inch with Season to Risk (Supermodel Records), and participation on numerous compiliation albums.
Starkweather toured Europe for the first time in mid-2005, visiting the Netherlands, Germany, England, France and other countries.

In band and choir, I learned much about music, how to play an instrument, enough about key signatures to teach myself to improvise on the piano a few years later, and of course, how to stand next to a good singer in choir so I wouldn't get yelled at.
Because Starkweather has such a good math teacher (who will likely lose his job in a co-op), I was able to sit down and tutor this student.
You're going to speed it up and let Starkweather dwindle to an elementary school of few kids and an unused building until the board has to make another "realistic" decision of common sense and close the elementary school.

I hated the bands coming out at the time and I never wanted be some bullshit trendy fucking nerd, kissing up to metal or hardcore bands.
All this talk that goes on about bands ripping off other bands, I need to get this off my chest, Starkweather is the foundation for all the shit these people are listening to.

 Semtex Magazine: Starkweather Interview
It's just exciting to know that Starkweather is coming over with all these things, thinking back at buying that "Into The Wire" album and how much it grew on me in the weeks after I bought the record.
There was a review that came out over 10 years ago that described the band as "beautiful, repulsive, hateful, and soul wrenching" and I've never heard a better, more concise description of the band because it covers all the bases, the harsh, the soft, the soul in the lyrics.
Starkweather have never broken up, never split, and have always remained close to one another.

This one's long overdue, as in my opinion Threadbare was one of the best and most underappreciated bands of the 90's, and I can remember wondering why the hell they weren't more "popular" even back when I was 17 or 18 and first discovering them.
They released a 7" on Watermark and two CD EP's on Doghouse (which are two of the finest releases in that label's history to this day) before going their separate ways, and that's about it.
Starkweather's "new" record has been done for well over a year and is finally getting released in the US in May. I'll certainly be getting around to posting about them then, ha...

It was exactly one year ago, on a gray, wet November day when Starkweather turned on the lights in his living room, and played me his forthcoming album, which would see release in June of this year.
Starkweather's from California, and November's probably the month we risk losing him to warm climate.

Since the band was reconstituted in the 90’s they have become known for their matching Woody Hayes coaching outfits as well as their Wolverine hate inspired lyrics.
One of the other awkward chapters in the band's history is the so called "High Street Riots of '96." Moments after the devestating loss to the Wolverines that year, the band began an impromptu performance that turned into a full scale war.
As all of the band's releases thru the years were on 7" vinyl singles their recorded output had been almost impossible to locate until they made the move to CD.

Simple fact: Starkweather is one of the greatest (and yet most criminally wronged, overlooked, and possibly cursed) bands to have ever existed, and there is absolutely no shred of doubt that "Croatoan" will be among the best records of 2006.
And I'm telling you right now, this band is not for everyone, and in fact when I first heard them some 11+ years ago I couldn't really handle the vocals at all.
The more copies of "Croatoan" Starkweather sells on CD the better their chances of getting a bigger budget for their next album, so fans both new and old should please make sure to buy this record rather than downloading it.

Into the Wire is a great record, full of dramatic ups and downs, moments of pensiveness and bursts of aggression, though always in a very well thought-out, controlled manner, with every note and beat exactly where they need to be.
It's not always apparent from the sound, but there is something about the, for lack of a better word, atmospheric density in Starkweather's music that is at least as inspiring as it was ahead of their time when Into the Wire first came out in 1995.
Starkweather is one of the best things ever, and Rennie (vocalist) is a God among men.
