The View from the Foothills: Starman Jones, Robert ...
Starman Jones is the tale of Max Jones, a young kid in trouble.
His dad is long dead, leaving him to run the farm and support his step-mother; his step-mother has married the town ne'er-do-well; his late uncle the Astrogator neglected to add his nephew's name to the rolls of the Astrogators' Guild.
(Note: Starman Jones was written in 1953.) The most important person on board ship is the Astrogator; it is his job to pilot the ship into the charted anomalies which provide quick transport around the galaxy.

The same is true of "Starman." Heinlein is at the top of his craft when he can weave snapshots of incredible technological developments into a personalized storyline that could occur to anyone in any age.
His genius was in his "juvenile novels" -- the stories he wrote for serialization in boy scout magazines, later published as books.lt;pgt;Max Jones dropped out of high school to support his lazy irresponsible stepmother by working on their farm, which has few amenities that would not have been commonplace in 1850.

These unusual villains may be one reason why Starman Jones remains interesting today: it is as close to On the Waterfront as science fiction — especially juvenile science fiction — would ever get.
But the really important reason why Starman Jones is so readable is that people have personal motivations that grow out of their environments — and that have nothing to do with any science-fictional thirst for adventure.
