  Bad Subjects: Making Starship Troopers
In Starship Troopers, elements of frontier mythology are structured into 'a systematized technology of power in order to reproduce and reinscribe the mythos of expansionist culture, both in the fictional spaces of film and text and, concomitantly, in America-at-large which looks to the cultural machine of Hollywood to rehabilitate its cultural ethos'.
Starship Troopers have to attend classes in 'History and Moral Philosophy' in which the complexities of civil rights and conflicting territorial claims are reduced to allegories of adolescent concerns such as the training of puppies, cheating at exams and relationships with parents.
Troopers and gamers are thus connected by a relationship between the body, technology and consumer capitalism which constructs war as a numbers game to be played according to rules of engagement which derive their moral justification from the reified structures of the free market.

Starship Troopers for PC Review - PC Starship Troopers Review
Starship Troopers has little dedication to faithfully re-creating the things that made the film unique, and it's a pretty lousy and technically deficient shooter to boot.
Starship Troopers takes place five years after the events of the movie, and humanity is still very much at war with the Klendathu, a race of nasty bug aliens that may or may not actually be the bad guys, depending on how much you want to read into the film's subtext.
On the gameplay front, Starship Troopers is an achingly generic FPS that revolves almost exclusively around the concept of throwing lots of enemies at you at once.

Salon | Melrose vs. the monsters
More than half of the original "Starship Troopers" is devoted to accounts of Johnny's training -- first in a brutal boot camp that takes in soft kids and turns out killing machines, and later in an officers' program that teaches him how to be a leader of men.
The "Starship Troopers" screenwriter, Ed Neumeier, who also collaborated with Verhoeven on "Robocop," rewrites Heinlein's spare, male-dominated story, embedding an unabashedly formulaic romantic plot in the story's brutal heart: Ace fighter Dizzy (Dina Meyer) loves Johnny, but Johnny loves crack pilot Carmen (Denise Richards), but Carmen's kinda more into her co-pilot, Zander (Patrick Muldoon).
Nothing in "Starship Troopers" carries the conviction of the Force or even "Independence Day's" rah-rah-for-mankind idealism; the movie can't commit to the militarism it inherited from Heinlein, and it never finds a different ideal to substitute.

 Starship Troopers
For Starship Troopers to be interpreted as pro-military it is necessary to see this film as a realist text with a narrative that takes itself seriously and which attempts to present a form of objectivity to the audience.
If there are difficulties in reading the film as a straight narrative with a pro-military agenda (and there are elements which send doubts as to whether this film is purely parodic), this may be because the film is trying to do something different that is not aligned with either realism or modernism.
Starship Troopers is certainly not an example of a film made by an auteur who is a filmmaker concerned with producing a distinctive and recognisable film style which expresses a personal vision.

Hardcore fans of the classic 1959 science fiction novel criticized director Paul Verhoven's 1997 film for not being faithful to the presentation of the title characters and in fairness the words "Starship Troopers" are never uttered once during the cinematic version.
But the film did manage to convey the over-the-top sense of propaganda that Heinlein presented in the novel, along with many stylish elements that are a staple of Verhoven's science fiction films like Total Recall and Robocop.
Plus, the film was a lot of fun in a guilty pleasure kind of way; it was by no means the greatest science fiction story of all time but it was nice to look at and has developed a cult following that rivals the book as a result.

The film's narrative structure is also parodic insofar as it operates according to cause and effect logic and progresses around a goal oriented character towards narrative closure.
The coming of age drama is a prominent element of the film from the start, in that the story begins when Rico and his friends are about to graduate from high school and they then spend the remainder of the film grappling with their identities.
Through historiographic metafictionality, the film demonstrates by way of emulation the way in which that which is written about in historical texts is deconstructed to the point where it seems to disappear altogether.

Wounded troopers can be med-evac-ed mid-mission if you've chosen a medic as one of your support troopers (support troopers feature psychics, snipers, medics and the minelayer/armour-healer engineers), but should you run out of med-evac resources (four per medic per mission), you're pretty much obliged to return to wherever your troopers died and retrieve his dog-tags.
The bugs of Starship Troopers are quite incredibly tough customers, pretty much capable of taking out any one of your troopers, no matter how well-armed and -armoured he may be, and in most cases, well able to take out packs of three, maybe four troopers single-handedly.
Starship Troopers is a lovely game for fans of the film, made by fans of the book who bring enough of the book back into the gameplay that it's a good game for fans of the book as well.

Starship Troopers (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Starship Troopers is a 1997 film directed by Paul Verhoeven, written by Edward Neumeier, and starring Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer and Denise Richards.
The film depicts a future state that is extremely militaristic and uncompromisingly warlike in its attitude toward a race of bugs that inhabits a distant planetary system.
The film was followed by the CGI animated television series Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles in 1999, along with a direct-to-video sequel Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation in 2004.

The basic story of the film is that mankind has declared war on planets containing bigass bugs that have a deep enjoyment for ripping soldiers to shreds.

Starship Troopers: (Basil Poledouris) Anyone who has actually read Robert Heinlein's 1959 novel "Starship Troopers" knows that director Paul Verhoeven's 1997 adaptation of the classic science-fiction tale was never meant to be completely loyal to the concept.
Because of the extensive post-production and special effects work necessary to bring the alien bugs of Starship Troopers to life, Poledouris was given an astounding six months in which to write and adapt his music for the film, consulting with Verhoeven frequently along the way.
Overall, however, Starship Troopers is ear candy, taking the heroic style from Robocop and magnifying it to nearly silly degrees that are, on the surface, engaging in their volume.

Many of the 'classic film moments' will be included in the game… but now the gamer is taking an active role.
The troopers in the game know how to fight (and will do so), but if the bugs are to be defeated the player will have to work out how to defeat the 'Tanker Bug', defend 'Whiskey Outpost' and save their comrades from what seems to be certain death.
When we were designing the game we were very wary of putting in anything that could be considered "none Starship Trooper like" - everything had to be 'real feeling' and look like it belonged in the 'original movies'.

The strange dichotomies in the film, one might say schizophrenia, are a result of having been born from a militaristic mother, namely Robert Heinlein's juvenile novel, delivered by a libertarian midwife, namely director Paul Verhoeven.

If you think that starship troopers is a film that explores mans fight against aliens then you have missed the plot,as with the majority of verhoven movies, the bounaries of society and the world we live in are challenged and satired.
The films satire is emphasised in the use of brainwashing the characters into joining the army and showing a public execution on primetime tv,hence pointing the finger at americas thirst for blood and justice, the film is deep in content and moral issues and certainly is more than just shoot outs and blood overdosage.
Be warned though this film comes with its 18 rating for a reason, very gory and i really mean that being killed by a bug piercing your body with 4 of its legs doesn't come with a price of showing some blood and guts.

Filming began 4/29/96 in California (LA and Long Beach, where Cal State's pyramid gym was used for the Jumpball game), New York, South Dakota, Wyoming (Casper, Hell's Half Acre), and Utah (an abandoned Wendover airstrip where the Enola Gay WWII bomber crew trained).
Troopers is very much a companion to the director's 1987 hit RoboCop, which dealt with similar issues in a comparably cheeky tone, without losing its ability to be a grand entertainment.
Encouragingly, though, the film is widely recognized in cult circles as a telling critique of the absurdity of wartime values.
