	Salon \| Melrose vs. the monsters
		More than half of the original "Starship Troopers" is devoted to accounts of Johnny's training -- first in a brutal boot camp that takes in soft kids and turns out killing machines, and later in an officers' program that teaches him how to be a leader of men.
		By the time the movie tries to turn more serious -- as, for instance, in a sequence where Johnny is flogged for carelessness that led to a comrade's death during an exercise -- the sadism just feels gratuitous and dirty, thrown in for sheer sensational effect.
		Nothing in "Starship Troopers" carries the conviction of the Force or even "Independence Day's" rah-rah-for-mankind idealism; the movie can't commit to the militarism it inherited from Heinlein, and it never finds a different ideal to substitute.

		Oddly enough, "Starship Troopers" began with screenwriter Ed Neumeier writing a screenplay about space marines up against big bugs that was called "Outpost 7", which 'borrowed' many elements from Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel with heavy sociopolitical overtones, "Starship Troopers" (in other words, a rip-off).
		Though the special effects are top-notch and the battle sequences have an epic quality to them (despite the nauseating carnage), the movie falls apart in the scenes when the focus shifts to the characters and the actual story.
		"Starship Troopers" is not a great movie, but it is an entertaining ride.

		Also, they have fully articulate robotic limbs in this movie, but it nevers occured to the generals of Starship Troopers to create some kind of robotic exterminator to clear out invasion spots before the humans land, especially since the depletion of the human population is one of the themes of this movie.

		The movie is a good video rental, when it's raining.
		No way man, the first one was great...a little light in the plot area but it was a fun action filled movie, with some decent comedy that while not the best story, could still entertain you for the whole 2 hours..(except for that really bad death scene on the ship as their leaving the planet)
		My only prob with it was that I got the fealing the director could not decide if he wanted it to be like all the other new sci-fi movies OR if he wanted it to be reminesent of the great b-movies of the past.

		All of them are patriotic and want to do their duty to the human race and so after graduating from high school, they join the Federal Service: Johnny and Dizzy end up joining the mobile infantry, Carl ends up in military intelligence ("two words combined that don't make sense"), and Carmen becomes a pilot.
