Analog computer - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
An analog computer (American English) or analogue computer (British English) is a form of computer using electronic or mechanical phenomena to model the problem being solved by using one kind of physical quantity to represent another.
The term is used in distinction to digital computers, in which physical or mechanical phenomena are used to construct a finite-state machine which is then used to model the problem being solved.
There is an intermediate group, hybrid computers, in which a digital computer is used to control and organize inputs and outputs to and from attached analogue devices; for instance analogue devices might be used to help generate initial values for iterations, or the analog computer might be used to solve a non-analytic differential equation problem.

Steady state theory - Science Articles :: Physics Post
In cosmology, the steady state theory is a model developed in 1949 by Fred Hoyle, Thomas Gold and others as an alternative to the Big Bang theory.
Although the model had a large number of supporters among cosmologists in the 1950s and 1960s, the number of supporters decreased markedly in the late 1960s and today it is considered a non-standard cosmology.
The steady state theory was developed as a result of theoretical calculations that showed that a static universe was impossible under general relativity and observations by Edwin Hubble that the universe was expanding.

 State (computer science)
Any change in the nature or quantity of such properties in a state is detected by an observer and thus a transmission of information occurs.
In computer science, state is a concept in automata theory which occasionally extends into some forms of systems programming such as lexers and parsers.
Whether the automaton in question is a finite state machine, a pushdown automaton or a full-fledged Turing machine, a state is a particular set of instructions which will be executed in response to the machine's input.
