State Route 20, also known as SR-20 or North Cascades Highway, is a State Highway (Route) in Washington.
SR-20 is one of only three State Routes in Washington that have portions closed in the winter (the others being State Route 410 and State Route 123).
Washington Pass annually receives several feet of snow throughout the winter, and is prone to avalanches leaving over 20 feet of snow on the road.

 HWY 20 ride report
During much of the summer, and especially on holiday weekends, it becomes an exercise in passing over-loaded and under-powered motor homes and travel trailers but on this fine mid-week morning in mid-may that would not be a problem.
I was behind traffic preparing to pass when I saw a State Trooper in a SUV in the distance.
The smells are now of the warmth of Eastern Washington, the curves fewer, the snow gone and the pavement showing signs of solar abuse in contrast to the perfect, beautiful light-grey mountain pavement.

Currently, Washington Pass is open and will remain open to motorists until the threat of avalanches closes the road for the winter.
Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews reported current pass conditions as 30 degrees and snowing.

I have been across Washington many times but never on the north route.
I second all the preceeding comments on travelling Highway 20 and the North Cascades route.
A great little place to stay near the east entrance to 20 would be near Okanagan, it's called Conconully Lake.

The Davis family homesteaded the area and remains of their primitive water power machinery can be seen on display in Newhalem.
Many of the homes that used to be filled with families have been removed, there is no longer a school, services have been reduced and the population is quite small.
