Route 79 continued N along present-day Riverside County Route R3, while Route 71 continued to the W. In 1966 (although historical information leads one to believe this happened in 1974), County Route R3 was defined, and Route 79 continued cosigned with Route 71 all the way to US 395 (now I-15).
The portion from I-5 in Orange County to Route 710 was defined in 1951; the portion from Route 710 to Route 90 was defined in 1947; and the portion from Route 90 to I-5 in San Fernando was defined in 1933.
In 1991, the remainder of Route 480, from Route 280 near Harrison Street in San Francisco to the junction of Route 1, Funston approach, and the approach to the Golden Gate Bridge, was deleted per SB 181, Ch 498.

California 371 connects California 79 at Aguanga with California 74 in the San Bernardino National Forest near Anza.
This was originally part of a much longer California 71, back when that route used to extend southeast via current Interstate 15 to Temecula and then turned east along California 79.
California 371 provides a back route from the Inland Empire and San Diego County to the desert around Palm Springs and Indio.
