State Street is a major north-south thoroughfare in Chicago, Illinois.
State Street became a shopping destination during the 1900s and is referred to in the song "Chicago", sung by Frank Sinatra where Frank refers it to "State Street, that Great Street." In 1979, Mayor Jane Byrne converted the downtown portion into a pedestrian mall with only bus traffic allowed.
Mayor Richard M. Daley oversaw the State Street Revitalization Project and on November 15, 1996, the street was reopened to traffic.

Chicago is one of a handful of stations built as part of Route 1 of Chicago's Initial System of Subways -- more popularly known as the State Street Subway -- north of downtown that followed the aesthetic design of the downtown stations but differed in layout.
Chicago was indeed eventually remodeled, but rather than in the gray granite of the Byrne-era project it was reclad in the colorful Art Deco style of the new Roosevelt/State.
The eight selected rail stations in addition to Chicago were Howard, 79th and 95th/Dan Ryan on the Red Line; Jefferson Park on the Blue Line; and both the Thompson Center and 203 N. LaSalle entrances to Clark/Lake, the Randolph-Washington mezzanine of Washington/State, and the Randolph-Washington mezzanine of Washington/Dearborn downtown.

The tavern green lampposts are steel and iron replicas of the ones designed specifically for the street by Chicago architects Graham, Anderson, Probst and White in 1926.
They are 30 feet high and adorned with ornamental acanthus leaves and the distinctive “Y” symbol that became the hallmark of Chicago’s infrastructure early in the 20th century, representing the confluence of the north and south branches of the Chicago River.
The State Street renovation project was sponsored by the Chicago Department of Transportation in cooperation with the Greater State Street Council.

For anyone not near chicago, block 37 is a whole city block with almost nothing on it, there's a building that is used by ComEd for power stuff.
Besides, surveys of shoppers on State and Michigan show that there's surprisingly little overlap between the two on any given day: a good 3/4 of Michigan Avenue shoppers don't live in the city, but the reverse is true on State Street.
