The budget for the State of New York includes an innovative $20 million program for the development of a cellulosic ethanol pilot facility, Governor George Pataki announced early in May. The pilot facility will produce ethanol from cellulosic biomass sources such as willow, switchgrass, paper mill wastes, and agricultural and forestry residues.
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets awarded grants of $22,385 for Dutchess County Cornell Cooperative Extension and Cornell University to try growing a 15-acre crop of switchgrass, and $60,000 for the State University of New York - College of Environmental Science and Forestry to develop its first commercial willow plantation.
New York is also supporting the development of more traditional ethanol production facilities within the state.

New York City's (NYC) water supply system is the largest unfiltered surface storage and supply system in the United States.
Forestry extension programs targeting Catskill/Delaware watershed NIPF owners are designed to increase NIPF stewardship through education and application (Watershed Forestry Task Force, 1996).
Forestry extension workshops and technical assistance programs, in particular, afford NIPF owners the opportunity to gain intimate knowledge of (1) sustainable forestry and its role in watershed management, and (2) the benefits of a written forest management plan in practicing sustainable forestry.

A federal grant under the SDWA is providing $1,250,173 for the nine projects conducted by state researchers, local governments, academia and nonprofit organizations to undertake research, monitoring, education, and implementation of management practices in the watershed.
The New York City watershed covers nearly 2,000 square miles in the counties of Delaware, Greene, Schoharie, Ulster, Sullivan, Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess and provides about 1.4 billion gallons of drinking water per day.
The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and the Yale School of Forestry will correlate the historic development of the Catskill-Delaware Watersheds landscape with significant changes in contaminants of concern to drinking water quality.

The faculty researchers and students at Cornell and Syracuse will be supported by one of 16 grants chosen from 300 proposals to the NSF, to foster a better understanding of the interrelationships that arise when living things at all levels interact with their environment.
This is a new, interdisciplinary team testing a new idea in a very complex ecosystem," says Bain, a hydro-ecologist in the New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Cornell who has been dubbed the "sturgeon general" for his studies of that endangered species in the Hudson River.
This is necessary because the Lake Ontario biocomplexity study might produce new knowledge that could aid regulators and policy-makers -- providing a better understanding of the environmental effects of manipulating water levels in the Great Lakes, for example.

Unlike other New York state-supported degree-granting institutions which had been created, or would eventually be created, at other private institutions in New York State, the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University was an autonomous institution that was administratively not part of its host institution.
This is in contrast to New York's contract colleges such as the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, which is a part of Cornell University.
