State and Main humorously chronicles the effect a Hollywood film crew has on small-town America.
The main problem hitting the film crew is that the old mill in the town burned down decades ago.
State and Main feels in some ways like an inside joke, but this is a joke that many people can enjoy.

At its best, State and Main is fast and sharp, but when a movie like this goes off the rails, it's more disappointing than when a bad movie does.
For all its wit and sharp casting, State and Main is way too pleased with itself to be funny or endearing.

DVD Review - State And Main   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
"State and Main" is that rare film that can make you laugh out loud and think at the same time, and it’s one of the best films that I’ve seen this year.
On the other side of the coin, "State and Main" is also a serious drama which explores the dark depths of man’s soul and the often times bizarre art of filmmaking.
Yes, the overall experience of watching "State and Main" will be maximized if you know something about how things work in Hollywood, but this knowledge isn’t a prerequisite for enjoying the film.

Welcome to David Mamet's State and Main, the acclaimed writer-director's funniest and most accessible film to date, propelled by the rocket fuel of Mamet's show-biz experience and driven by an ensemble cast that simply couldn't be better.
What I liked about "State and Main" is it's treatment of the small town locals as being as sophisticated, savvy, and in the case ot the young teenage girl, promiscuous as the blindsided big city moviemakers, while never abandoning it's Rockwellian small town charm, or it's big city smarts.
The obvious star of "State and Main" is Philip Seymour Hoffman a previously little known Hollywood actor whose first appeared on the screen as the spoilt rich Daddy supported George Willis Jr.

STATE AND MAIN is the kind of big-hearted movie that's worth seeing again and again.

State and Main, written and directed by David Mamet (The Spanish Prisoner, The Winslow Boy, House of Games), follows a Hollywood film crew into the sleepy town of Waterford, Vermont, for the shooting of a would-be blockbuster.
State and Main also stays light thanks to Mamet’s backing away from his trademark clipped cadence, at least a little bit -- this dialogue is so good it transcends just about anything you could do to it.
State and Main might have been my #1 film of 2000, but the DVD is nothing special.

State and Main (2000) - A Review by David Nusair
State and Main doesn't have much by way of plot, but it does have a group of very talented actors portraying quirky and interesting characters.
But the problem with State and Main - as well-acted and written as it is - lies in its complete lack of a plot.
But this is an awfully minor complaint for a film that features such fine actors doing some of their best work (Hoffman, in particular, is especially strong in a lead role).

State and Main Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Written and directed by David Mamet and starring Alec Baldwin, Sarah Jessica Parker, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and William H. Macy, this showbiz satire should have been a wry tweaking of moviemaking on par with The Player or the underrated Living in Oblivion.
As a result, State and Main wavers jarringly between cynicism and sentimentality, with characters dispensing soggy chestnuts of homespun wisdom (Pidgeon's musings on the nature of truth are about as fresh as week-old rice pudding) as often as they trade sarcastic barbs ("You want me to eat carbohydrates?" screams the weight-conscious Price).
In State and Main, David Mamet's seventh film, the playwright returns to comedy-on-celluloid for the first time since 1988.

SPLICEDwire | "State and Main" review (2000)
Playwright, filmmaker and satirical dialogue savant David Mamet ruthlessly runs Hollywood through with a poison pen in "State and Main," a wickedly ironical and incisive industry lampoon about a film crew laying siege to a Vermont hamlet where they intend to shoot a pretentious period drama.
But never one to just kid around, the writer-director also makes a shrewd underlying observation about how eagerly actors, writers and directors compromise themselves to crank out celluloid crap if it might get their hands on that brass ring of boffo box office.
"State and Main" is the first brilliantly biting showbiz satire of Hollywood's second century, and one of the genre's most droll and original entries.
