To the north was the Chamber of Deputies, later the House of Representatives; on the south the Council Chamber of the Governor and Assistants, later the Senate Chamber.
Demands on the Old State House were temporarily relieved when the County, Superior, and Supreme Courts moved to the new Providence County Courthouse, built 1875-1877 (later replaced by the current courthouse at 250 Benefit Street, constructed 1924-1933).
Construction of the State House on Smith Hill began in 1895, and the building was occupied during the winter of 1900-1901.

 New Hampshire Almanac
In 1881, plans having been proposed to gain new space for needs caused by growth in State operations, by the removal of the library to a building of its own, plans for such a building were made.
The arguments included the danger from fire, the inadequacy of the House and Senate to seat the membership, and the lack of meeting rooms for the legislative committees.
This called for what amounted to an entirely new state house at an expense of approximately a million dollars, and by 1909 a bill for such an amount was introduced.

 Visitor's Guide to the Alabama Legislature
Because the State House is a temporary location for the Alabama Legislature, public areas on the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th floors are quite confined, and often crowded on Legislative Days.
All persons who shall be in attendance at the State House for the purposes of urging legislators to support or oppose legislation, are required to be registered as Lobbyists with the Alabama Ethics Commission.
The State Fire Marshal has full statutory authority to clear crowds from any floor of the State House, as well as bar entrance of further persons, if such congestion is deemed hazardous to the welfare of the public.

History: Sebastopol House State Historic Site, located in Seguin, Guadalupe County, is a an 1856 Greek Revival-style house sitting on 2.2 acres of its original 4-acre site.
Sebastopol House is listed as a Registered Texas Historic Landmark and is in the National Register of Historic Places as a result of its unusual limecrete construction and its architectural style.
The house is restored to its 1880 appearance.
