State and university officials disagree over whether MSU is getting increased funding from the state this year.
Last year, MSU was initially allocated $287.5 million, but the school only got about $285.2 million at the end of the year, said Greg Bird, spokesman for the Office of the State Budget.

School districts were urged by state leaders last year to curb tax increases, and now districts that heeded the call will feel the consequences.
Districts that voluntarily restrict their levies one year will not be able to catch up unless they ask voters to approve a tax increase in a referendum.
According to the state Department of Public Instruction, Slinger and Hartford were among 24 school districts that levied $75,000 or more under their limits last school year.

General Assembly leaders Thursday unveiled a comprehensive package of legislation aimed at improving the quality of care at Rhode Island’s nursing homes and providing more oversight of their administration and financial condition, a State House press release stated.
“Our committee’s mission this year was to take a long, hard look at the entire nursing home industry, from the perspective of residents and families, including how the state enforces licensing standards,” said Sen. Elizabeth H. Roberts (D-Cranston, Warwick), who serves as co-chairperson of the joint committee, in the news release.
That audit showed that the office was generally complying with federal standards for investigating nursing facilities, but not the more stringent state standards, and that nine nursing facilities were issued 2005 licenses without required inspections.
