		The State of Deseret was a provisional state of the United States, proposed in 1849 by Mormon settlers in Salt Lake City.
		On October 4, the Utah territorial legislature voted to re-enact the laws and ordinances of the State of Deseret.

		Deseret is a term originally derived from the Book of Mormon, the scriptural unique to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the LDS Church) and other Latter Day Saint groups.
		The U.S. federal government ultimately rejected the name "Deseret" because of its religious significance and its unfortunate resemblance to the English word "desert." The territory was instead admitted to the Union in 1896 as "Utah," a name derived from the resident Ute Indians.
		Furthermore, the state nickname is the "Beehive State."

		The original six counties of Deseret, and those created later, covered only a small part of the provisional state and were geographically defined as encompassing certain inhabited valley areas, none of which were located in, or extended into, what is now Nevada (see Map 4).
		The Utah act was an elaboration of the Provisional State of Deseret county divisions, expanded to encompass the entire area of the territory.
		Such action by either the Provisional State of Deseret or the territorial legislature still would have been inadequate had it been taken prior to the 1851 settlements in the "far west," since the county seats of all of the counties where Nevada is now located were situated hundreds of miles to the east.

		The State of Deseret was proposed to Congress first in 1849, and three times further in the next 30 years, but the concept of a state organized and run by the Mormon Church was offensive to many Americans.
		Deseret lingered until the 1880s as a ghost state, with an active legislature (generally the same one that governed the Territory of Utah) that convened directly after the Utah legislature had adjourned.
		The "Deseret News" is the most visible remnant of the name which meant "honey bee" and was the symbol of the organized, patriarchal, communal system established by the Mormon apostles and pioneers.

		"Deseret" is a Book of Mormon term (Ether 2:3) meaning "honeybee." On 3 May 1849 John M. Bernhisel left Great Salt Lake City with petitions asking Congress to create the Territory of Deseret, encompassing the Great Basin, the Colorado River drainage area, and a link to the Pacific Ocean around San Diego.

		Many who are familiar with the history of the far western United States know of the seemingly grandiose attempt of Brigham Young and his Mormon associates in the mid-nineteenth century to secure political dominion over their "promised land," a vast domain they would propose as the State of Deseret.
		Their proposed state boundaries extended from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to the Sierra Nevada of California and from the upper Rio Grande River of New Mexico and the Gila River of later arizona to what became approximately the northern boundaries of Utah and Nevada, including small corners of future Oregon and Wyoming.

		The new General Assembly of the State of Deseret met in July 1849 and selected Almon W. Babbitt to carry its petition for statehood to Washington, D.C. Since Bernhisel was already on his way with a petition for territorial government, difficulties seemed inevitable.
		Although the State of Deseret's application was rejected and the Utah territory was formed on 9 September 1850, a Mormon state government, functioning since March 1849, continued to serve until [p.206] April 1851 when the territorial government took over.
