Slovene territory settled from the 6th century on reached its greatest extent in the 9th century, covering an area from the Bay of Trieste to the Danube River in the north and Lake Balaton in the east.
Slovene ethnic territory subsequently shrank due to Germanization in the west and north and the arrival of the Hungarians on the Pannonian Plain.
Slovene settlement in Austria waned as early as the 13th century: German colonization reached the Villach Basin in Carinthia, the Graz Basin in Styria, and the Sora River flood plain in Carniola, and Italian colonization dominated the Friulian lowlands.

According to the Constitution of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, adopted July 28, 1921, coat-of-arms of Croats was described as shield of 5 x 5 square fields of red and white colours and it was placed in the newly formed country's coat-of-arms, together with Serb and (kind of) Slovene coat-of-arms.
Later, when king Alexander proclaimed dictatorship and Yugoslavia on January 6, 1929, all national symbols were banned and Croats, Slovenes and Serbs were described just as three branches of one newly proclaimed Yugoslav nation.

After the fall of Austro - Hungarian empire the newly established State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs demanded this territory for itself in order to unite all Slovenes in one state.
On October 10th, 1920 referendum was held in Zone A. Because of a strong Austrian propaganda, disordering conditions in Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the fact that Yugoslav government (consisting mainly of Serbs) hadn't cared much for Slovenes, the voting turned out in favor of Austria.
Since then, Slovenes living in Carinthia (and in Austria in general) have been continuously exposed to germanization.

The flag was used even before the law, but was formally introduced only with the 1921 so-called Vidovdan Constitution, as the national flag.

On October 29, 1918 Croatian Parliament (Sabor) abandon all state-juridical relations with the Kingdom of Hungary and Empire of Austria and as free country Croatia entered into the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs.
In this short living state, there were issued several post stamps.
One of them shows a Croatian coat-of-arms quite similar to 1867-1918 design, only this time without crown and the six-pointed star in Slavonian arms is in below blue field, not above, which is missing.
