John, Lacey and their classmates discovered Michigan had no state reptile during a classroom discussion of state symbols last school year.
Deciding on the merits of the painted turtle, the students approached Gnodtke with the idea, testified on behalf of the bill he drafted and followed the legislation as it overwhelmingly passed in the House on October 12 and the Senate on December 13.
