Staten Island is an island and borough off the east coast of the United States, in the Bay of New York.
The Village of New Brighton in the town of Castleton was incorporated in 1866, and in 1872 the Village of New Brighton annexed all the remainder of the Town of Castleton and became coterminous with the town.
It is connected to Manhattan by the Staten Island Ferry and to Brooklyn by the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.

Richmond Creek is a stream in Staten Island, a borough of New York City in the United States.
South of Richmondtown it emerges into a wide floodplain of wetlands that has been designated as part of Staten Island's "Bluebelt," a region of wetlands in which many, but not all, kinds of development are prohibited.
In colonial times and in the early 19th century the creek was used to operate several mills in the center of the island.

Situated between the Newark Basin to the west, and the coastal plain to the east, is the Staten Island Serpentinite, which underlies the "highlands" of Staten Island.
The Newark Basin, which extends from Rockland County New York to southeastern Pennsylvania, is one of 16 such ENA(Eastern North America) basins that formed as the supercontinent of Pangaea split apart.
The sedimentary rock units of the Newark Basin that appear as bedrock on Staten Island are (1) the Stockton Formation consisting of sandstones and arkoses; (2) the Lockatong Formation consisting of siltstones and shales; (3) the Passaic Formation consisting of shale, siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate.

The highest point on the island, the summit of Mount Loretta elevation 410 ft (125 m), is also the highest point in the five boroughs, as well as the highest point on the Atlantic Coastal Plain south of Maine.
