 Fresh Kills Landfill
For the 53 years that the landfill was in operation, Staten Island was known as the borough where the rest of New York City threw its trash on.
For years, Islanders protested for the closing of the land fill, arguing that not only is it unbearable to live with, but they were also concerned that the dump was violating certain health issues.
According to the Staten Island Advance, from the time the dump opened in 1948 to the day it closed on March 22, 2001, an estimation of 2 billion tons of trash was deposited on the landfill (A brighter future for a place known just as Fresh Kills, p G18).

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – In an effort to help keep Staten Island’s streets clean and beautiful, Borough President James P. Molinaro today presented to the Department of Sanitation a new mechanical street sweeper at a press conference in front of Borough Hall.
Molinaro allocated $118,000 in capital funds for the vehicle, which will augment Staten Island’s existing street sweeper fleet, which is currently comprised of seven sweepers.

Austen began a relationship with Gertrude Tate in 1917 but it wasn't until several years later that Tate was able to overcome her family's objections and move to Staten Island to be with Austen.
