Nigeria is currently divided into 36 states and 1 federal capital territory.
From 1967 to 1970 the areas of Mid-Western State and the Eastern Region attempted to secede, as Biafra.
In 1987 two new states were established, followed by another 10 in 1991, bringing the total to 31.

The state occupies the South-East corner of Nigeria and is bounded on the north by Abia State, on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by the Cross River State and on the west by Rivers State.
The state is bordered by Kano and Jigawa to the north, Yobe and Gombe to the east and Kaduna State to the west and Plateau and Taraba State to the south.
To the east, the state is bounded by Benue State, and to the south by Anambra and Enugu states and to the west by Edo, Ondo, Ekiti and Kwara States.

Also, state boundaries were adjusted: Igala (east of the Niger River) transferred from Kwara to Benue state; Ughelli transferred from Mid-Western to Rivers state; Opobo transferred from South-Eastern to Rivers state.
1996-10: Bayelsa state was split from Rivers; Ebonyi state was formed from parts of Abia and Enugu; Ekiti state was split from Ondo; Gombe state was split from Bauchi; Nassarawa state was split from Plateau; and Zamfara state was split from Sokoto.
