Topic: Statfjord oil field

  Norway as an Oil Producer
The field lay directly north of the boundary to Denmark, at the southernmost point of the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
The country's oil output expanded beyond the expectations of earlier prognoses, mainly because better understanding of the reservoirs was obtained and technological breakthroughs facilitated their exploitation.
However, it would be natural to reach agreements to cooperate on the exploitation of oil and gas which lies on both sides of the boundary, as Norway and the UK did in connection with the StatfJord, Frigg and Murchison fields in the North Sea.

Oil was discovered in 1969 in the Ekofisk field, which remains by far the biggest field in the area.
Statfjord, which extends into UK waters, has produced over 3.5 Bn Bbls in Norway since 1979 from 3 concrete gravity structures although the field is declining rapidly.
The field also has a laterally extensive shallow oil reservoir with excellent properties and is the highest oil producer in the region, at 385,000 Bbls per day in 2004, although this is probably near its peak.

Oil in the field is heavy and complicated to recover.
Oil is piped to a tie-in with the Ula pipeline and on via the Ekofisk Centre to Teesside, while gas goes through a dedicated pipeline to the Ekofisk Centre for sale to the Ekofisk group.
Oil and gas are separated and metered on the Hod platform, and piped as a two-phase flow for final processing on Valhall.

Statfjord Øst is an oil field located around 7 km northeast of the Statfjord field in 150 – 190 metres of water.
The field has been developed with three well templates that are tied back to Statfjord C. Two of the templates are for production and one for water injection.
The Statfjord Øst reservoir consists of Mid-Jurassic sandstones in the upper and lower parts of the Brent group.

Norwegian Petroleum and European Integration - 1993
The sale of oil to Israel in 1982, the British rejection of the Sleipner Agreement (a gas contract) in 1984, and the "oil-option policy" (favoring oil over gas production), which was inspired by Norway's inability to sell high-priced gas on the Continent, were all influenced by political and strategic thinking.
In the field of natural gas, the single internal market is not necessarily introduced as a dramatic shift from one set of rules to another at the end of 1992.
In the field of energy, the country may have a say in these dynamic processes also as a non-member, even though its voice would, probably, be louder if she had a member's seat at the table.

OilOnline - The Original Online Source for the Oil Industry
All going according to plan, the Statfjord late life (SFLL) project will generate 'a decade of extra output', with volumes of around 32bcm of gas, 25 million barrels of oil and 60 million barrels of condensate calculated to be in the offing, a resource corresponding to a 'medium-sized discovery' on the Norwegian continental shelf.
To extend the field's life by another 10-15 years, crude flow will have to be replaced by gas, with major modification work carried out on the field's trio of production platforms to accommodate the switch, and extensive drilling to target new gas targets while squeezing out the last oil pocketed about the field.
Statfjord A is already equipped for lowpressure gas production, and its adaptations and well programme will both be 'limited', but B and C will need 'substantial upgrading' before handling large volumes of gas.

energyme.com :: Statoil: More oil from better sand control
More oil than planned will flow from the three platforms on Statoil's Statfjord field in the North Sea this year, thanks to an improved system for monitoring sand intrusion in the wells.
While a field continues to produce on plateau, the answer to this problem is to close down wells which are producing sand.
Statfjord B adopted the full-scale sand management strategy in April, with the C platform following in mid-July and installation of detectors on Statfjord A scheduled for completion in late August.

A combined cycle power plant, producing 300 MW of electricity net, and a CO sequestering plant are located on the Condeep platform at Statfjord A. This is one of the first large platforms to go out of production on the Norwegian continental shelf.
The power from this plant supplies the three main Norwegian oil fields Statfjord, Gullfaks and Snorre by AC cable.
But according to the report, the technical and economical considerations will be very similar for other locations, provided that both a CO deposit site, gas supply and local power market are close to the platforms.
