The problem is that several other kids from his school (both friends and enemies) have been exposed to same gas, and developed powers of their own (these kids are referred to as “Bang Babies.”); some become allies, while others, such as school bully F-Stop, become his foes.
What makes Static Shock especially effective is its ability to portray teenage life (and angst) as it really is, with issues which face many teens on a daily basis; I was especially impressed how it presents the anti-gang message in the first episode without being condescending.
Static Shock features less-informative extras, which is too bad, since the origins of this show are probably more interesting.

A community in a harmonious paradise is threatened by evil; normal institutions fail to contend with this threat; a selfless superhero emerges to renounce temptations and carry out the redemptive task; aided by fate, his decisive victory restores the community to its paradisiacal condition; the superhero then recedes into obscurity [his secret identity].
