Stationary engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Victorian era railway engineering, many attempts were made to replace locomotives by stationary engines, on the grounds that it was inefficient to move something as large and heavy as a steam engine around.
Small stationary engines were frequently used on a farm to drive various kinds of power tools and equipment such as circular saws, pumps, and hay elevators.
The engines were usually powered by gasoline, or in some cases for economy it was possible to switch over to run on paraffin after the engine had warmed up - to achieve this required a part of the inlet tract to be heated by exhaust gases in order to vaporise the less volatile fuel.

EPA: Federal Register: Control of Emissions From New Nonroad Diesel Engines: Amendments to the Nonroad Engine Definition
For example, the engine is defined as a nonroad engine if it is used to propel a piece of mobile equipment such as a bulldozer or farm tractor or if it is used in equipment that is propelled while performing its function such as a lawn mower.
Engines that are part of an engine family that has been certified by EPA to meet applicable nonroad engine standards may get used in either portable or stationary applications.
Under this revision, an engine in that certified engine family that is used in agricultural operations in California would continue to meet the definition of nonroad irrespective of its use as long as some engines in the engine family are used in portable applications.

ipedia.com: Steam engine Article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Early engines worked by the vacuum of condensing steam, whereas later types (such as steam locomotives) used the power of expanding steam.
However steam engines are less favored for automobiles, which are generally powered by internal combustion engines, because steam requires at least thirty seconds (in a flash boiler) or so to develop pressure.
A steam engine exhausting to atmosphere will have an efficiency (including the boiler) of 5% but with the addition of a condenser the efficiency is greatly improved to 25% or better.

Stationary engines, our collection and a bit of history
VISSIA's cousin by the name of OTTEN from Breda had seen stationary engines at the world trade fair in Paris and coming home he proceeded to build a very small gas engine and after fiddling with it for a while, he even made it run.
We are also not sure how many Vissia engines were sold, we do know they had an agent in Antwerp and they sold a lot of engines to Germany and that several years ago there were still two engines running on swamp gas somewhere in India.
The engine builders who in 1877 as you know discovered the first internal combustion engine with a good output were Otto and Lange.

After the engine has started on petrol, the main paraffin supply is turned on by a cock provided on the tank and the flow can then be regulated by a needle valve on the vaporiser.
