AssiStat -- a Windows-based package of calculations and analyses useful in educational and psychological research, practice, and in measurement and statistics courses.
Designed as a complement to typical statistical packages rather than as a primary analysis tool, it picks up where primary analysis packages usually fall short--in performing secondary analyses like correction of correlations for restriction in range or less-than-perfect reliability, and other specialized analyses and calculations usually not available in standard packages without special programming.
J is particularly strong in the mathematical, statistical, and logical analysis of arrays of data.

Carlson, Software for Statistical Analysis of Sample Survey Data
Statistical methods for estimating population parameters and their associated variances are based on assumptions about the characteristics and underlying distribution of the observations.
Packages should have the capacity to handle nonstandard designs, or provide guidance in the documentation as to the most appropriate design to specify in these circumstances and what the consequences are (such as an overestimate of the variance).
Depending on the specialized package and the estimates desired, it may be necessary to then take the output from the specialized package and carry out further data manipulation in the original general-purpose (or yet another) statistical package to obtain the needed estimates.

Many of these packages provide a very high level of quality graphical data display, as well as a flexible editing environment so that scientists can create, present or publish graphics that range from the stylishly simple to the creatively complex.
Hence, in the review below, some packages were not rated for a particular topic area (for example, survival analysis) because they did not have an option for immediately displaying the results or diagnostics associated with the statistical procedure.

Brogan: Pitfalls of Using Standard Statistical Software Packages for Sample Survey Data
Use of standard statistical packages with a weighting variable may yield the same point estimates for population parameters as sample survey software packages.
Other standard statistical packages are assumed to provide the same results as SAS for unweighted analyses and for point estimates for weighted analyses.
Whether this is true in other standard statistical packages depends upon the packages' default options for weighted analyses in chi-square tests.
